Encyclopedia Titanica Message Board: Smoking Room On Fire!
I grew up in the 1950s, when open fires were still the standard form of domestic heating and fire safety was drummed into us from an early age.
I would have thought, incidentally, that this one fire in a well-attended public room presented less of a risk than the hundreds of tiny fires burning on the ends of cigarettes and cigars in a great many locations throughout the ship.
For some time after the collision those of the stewards who were still at their duties continued to observe them 'as normal', and that would have included putting the fire out in the Smoking Room at 'lights out' (midnight), if it had not been allowed already to burn itself out.

Instead, Room on Fire is eleven songs sharing DNA with its predecessor, a follow-up of more sleepy, contagious mono-pop that doesn't sound diligently recorded so much as yawned out.
Speaking of the originality quotient-- and not to add more historical tinder to the fire of what bands The Strokes supposedly owe a debt to, but-- lead guitarist Nick Valensi is sweating The Pixies' Joey Santiago something fierce here.
His development is the only newish detail I can detect on Room on Fire, and it's an inspiration that lends improvement; Santiago's beautifully simple lead lines were The Pixies' secret weapon, and Valensi employs a similar humble style to lend a melodic counterpoint to the proceedings.

There’s much to suggest they’re running in place: “Room on Fire” (it’s in stores Tuesday) bears the same world-weary ennui of “Is This It?”; the same renewal of flirtation with the New Wave era; the same number of songs, the same austere, bare-bones production values, the same less than 40-minute length.

Room On Fire, completed with producer Gordon Raphael, who helmed their 2001 debut Is This It, is that album: instantly familiar, imbued with both a road-tested tightness and the world-weariness of the nouveau rock star, it's custom-built to hold off the haters while the band figure out the whole fame thing.
