Following the failed commercial success of 2001's "Nation," Sepultura aborted their contract with Roadrunner records and signed with SPV records for the follow up, 2003's "Roorback." This album is the group's tenth album total, but only their third album without original vocalist Max Cavalera and with Derrick Green behind the mic.
On the plus side, "Roorback" is the group's heaviest album since Max left the band.
Likewise, the album opening tune, "Come Back Alive," is fast, with a steam rolling main riff; "As It Is" is a catchy chugger with humming bass notes and some fine drumming by Igor; and, lastly, "Leech" is an explosive thrasher.

  NHPRC - Annotation September 2002
The Roorback Hoax was clearly intended to smear the moral character of the Democratic candidate for the Presidency, and to emphasize the association of the Democracy with the worst aspects of slavery.
The Roorback Hoax disappeared from the Whig campaign newspapers, and apparently from the history of the Presidential election of 1844.
The Roorback Hoax was therefore not an unusual example of political campaign excess, even given its blatant falsehood and the subsequent embarrassed retraction by the Whig press.

Unrest and political corruption are recurring themes on Roorback ; American singer Green and his Brazilian colleagues spare no anger on incendiary tracks like "Mind War," "Apes of God," and the crushing opener, "Come Back Alive" (which is about surviving the horrors of wartime combat).
The songs that Sepultura wrote for Roorback paint a consistently bleak and troubling picture of the world -- one that is only reinforced by an unlikely remake of U2 's "Bullet the Blue Sky" appended to the album.
When Roorback came out during the summer of 2003, Sepultura had been together for 19 years -- and this compelling disc finds them very much on top of their game after almost two decades in the metal field.

Roorback, the third album released under “the Green Party,” as it were, is also the first under new label SPV.
And while the word “roorback” actually means “a defamatory falsehood published for political effect,” it’s probably no coincidence the title was chosen for Sep’s latest.
The opening track, “Come Back Alive,” is a smoker, slowly coming in to set the tone and then slamming the listener with Andreas’ muddy, down and dirty swamp guitar and Igor’s pounding of the skins proves he’s still relevant to heavy metal.

 Hellride Music - Sepultura - Roorback (SPV/Steamhammer)
What I hear on Roorback though is a audio kick in the ass - politically-charged thrash mixed with hardcore, maybe a little too much on the hardcore side of things because I don't hear Andreas let loose on the fretboard for a good 20 minutes into the album.
On the plus side, Igor Cavalera is everybit the drum hero utilizing a variety of creative fills and rhythms and an overall drum sound that is rich, clear, organic and seemingly free of triggers or click tracks (tools that are rapidly becoming standard in heavy metal - to my chagrin).

In the midst of the 1844 presidential campaign between James K. Polk and Henry Clay, a letter was published in a newspaper in Ithaca, New York claiming that a reputable witness (one Baron von Roorback) had seen Polk purchase and brand 43 slaves.
The letter caused an uproar that threatened to derail Polk's campaign until it was discovered that the whole thing was a hoax perpetrated by the opposing party — a 19th-century Watergate.
The incident proved a political boomerang; Polk won the election and the name "roorback" became a byword for political dirty tricks.

Now on a new label, they have released "Roorback" which could be the album that shows the world that Max Cavelera was not Sepultura.
The only snag about this record and the two previous records is that it misses the extra guitar supplied by Max to carry the extra punch.
Roorback is a brilliant album, and dare I say it, nearly as good as Roots.

Their overt desire to be Korn totally ruined the band for me, and I had all but forgotten them...
The band is much slower than they used to be, but that isn't surprising, given how long they have been around (1986, with several line up changes, mainly in the vocalist category).
The songs themselves are set in the lower registers of the sound field, thus giving us the thickest sounding Sepultura record to date.

Producer and mixer Steve Evetts (Who also produced Nation) is again manning the controls, with Roorback (A term used in the media for a person uses a lie to take political advantage) almost entirely recorded in Sepultura’s homeland.
Roorback is certainly a test of faith between fans and the band, and it’s safe to say that the third release with Green on vocals is the best this line up has come up with yet.
While Sepultura are hardly breaking new ground on this album, they do seem to have found a formula that gels within the song writing, and Green’s vocal presence.

Roorback, in case you’re wondering is a word (noun) that means a defamatory falsehood published for political effect, also known as Black Propaganda.
When Roorback was released it also was released with a special edition of the album.
What makes this even weirder is that all the songs run about the average three to three and a half minutes.

KNAC.COM - News - Sepultura To Release Roorback in August
The 14 tracks on Roorback illustrate the necessary ingredients to a successful venture into today's heavy music world.
From the aggressive vocals and thrash-based riffing on "Mind War" to the impressive rendition of U2's "Bullet the Blue Sky," Sepultura are set to reaffirm their position of power on the heavy metal food-chain.
Roorback draws its title from a word meaning "A defamatory falsehood published for political effect, AKA fl propaganda." Indeed, Sepultura have always spoken out against prejudice and the abuse of political power, and the lyrics heard on Roorback indicate that they are as furious as ever about the state of the world today.

Ever since Max Cavalera left metal stalwarts Sepultura, the group has steadily, sadly gone downhill.
On their newest release, Roorback, most the elements that made Sepultura such an influential, powerful band were sorely lacking.
The trademark tribal drums have virtually disappeared, the powerful lyrics and vocals are shadows of their former selves (of course, it is with a different singer than Max) and the guitars just seem to chug along.
