Antarctica is surrounded by the world’s stormiest seas.
Antarctica’s frigid nature was revealed by the second voyage (1772–75) of the English explorer Capt. James Cook.
Different parts of the Antarctic Peninsula and the islands of the Scotia Arc were explored by de Gerlache (1897–98), a Swedish expedition under Dr. Otto Nordenskjold (1901–4), the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition led by W. Bruce (1902–4), and two French expeditions led by Dr. Jean B. Charcot (1903–5 and 1908–10).

West Antarctica is much younger than East Antarctica, and, although some rocks of up to 570 million years old have been found on the Antarctic Peninsula, the majority of rocks are between 2 and 225 million years old.
Whereas East Antarctica consists of part of a shield of ancient continental rock, West Antarctica consists of a number of separate blocks of younger continental rock that joined to the East Antarctic shield late in its evolution.
The rocks of West Antarctica show several similarities to the rocks of South America, and the northern mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Sandwich Islands are an extension of the volcanic arc of the Andean chain.

 Ross Ice Shelf Velocities
During data reduction and analysis it was possible to obtain an indication of position errors for these one-pass solutions from the consistency of the data and the geometry of the satellite orbit (W.R. MacDonald, personal communication, 1973).
Most of the stations with unacceptably large errors were near Roosevelt Island, or midway between Roosevelt Island and Crary Ice Rise, where there is strong convergence as two ice streams meet.
Significant improvement in the velocity estimates for these stations was achieved by extrapolating from nearby control stations by using both the longitudinal strain rate between stations and the transverse velocity gradients calculated from the observed values of rotation rate and the strain rate tensor, as described in the last section.

Antarctica’s ice shelves are formed when ice from the ice sheet that covers almost all of the continent slowly flows to the shore to create shelves of ice floating on the sea.

A large iceberg was "born" early this week from the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica near Roosevelt Island.
The iceberg was formed from glacial ice moving off the Antarctic continent and calved along pre-existing cracks in the Ross Ice Shelf near Roosevelt Island.
The calving of the iceberg essentially moves the northern boundary of the ice shelf about 25 miles to the south, a loss that would normally take the ice shelf as long as 50-100 years to replace.

Specifically we are determining : mean January temperatures using in situ AWS data (where available), skin temperature using AVHRR thermal data; melt season duration using AVHRR albedo measurements; SSM/I microwave brightness temperatures; historical records of surface air temperature; and radar backscatter strength associated with the presence of a percolation or saturation zone.
Initial results show that the northeastern Ross Ice Shelf, near Roosevelt Island, has a mean January air temperature of about -5° C, moderate radar backscatter strength, and experiences extensive multiday melt events in many (but not all) years of the last two decades, but no ponding.
The Larsen C ice shelf has a mean January temperature of about -1.5 °C and has very high radar backscatter, and experiences a melt season of about 50 days duration on average.
