Topic: Root (chord)

  Chord Progression Glossary
Chord names identified by the note which is the root of the chord where this note is described by its alphabetic name.
A succession of two functional chords where the root of the second chord is an interval of a perfect fourth or augmented fourth higher or an interval of a perfect fifth or diminished fifth lower.
The chord on the first degree of the scale), II the supertonic chord (the chord on the second degree of the scale) and V the dominant (the chord on the fifth degree of the scale).

triads : root position : chord inversions
The chords in the figure are written in root position, which is the most basic way to write a triad.
The third of the chord is written a third higher than the root, and the fifth of the chord is written a fifth higher than the root (which is also a third higher than the third of the chord).
A chord in second inversion may also be called a six-four chord, because the intervals in it are a sixth and a fourth.

 An Introduction To Chords
A major chord consists of a 'root' (the note on which the chord is based, usually also the lowest note of the chord), the note a 'major third' (four half-steps) higher than the root, and the note a 'minor third' (three half- steps) higher than the second note.
C9 means to take a C major chord and add the ninth tone of the C-major scale to it, so C9 would be composed of c, e, g, c, and d, in that order (though on guitar the d might be added an octave lower (the second) instead).
This "seventh chord as the dominant of a scale" is known as a "dominant seventh" or "major-minor seventh", and the term "seventh chord", if not modified somehow, almost always refers to this chord.

In the major-minor 7th chord, root in bass, the root is sometimes doubled and the 5th is omitted.
Repeated Roots: When roots in the bass are repeated, the two triads may be written in the same position (open or close), or they may be in different positions.
The 13th is usually in the soprano and resolves a 3rd downward to the tonic factor of the tonic chord.

 Types Of Power Chords
This power chord pattern is similar to the previous pattern, only it's root note is now on the A string instead of the low E string.
The root of this power chord pattern is not the note on the lowest string, but instead it's the note played on the G string (3rd string).
The root of the 3rd string root power chord is also a C note, so it too is a C power chord.

 Root (chord) - Definition, explanation
In music the root (basse fondamentale) of a chord is the note or pitch upon which that chord is perceived or labelled as being built or hierarchically centered upon.
When the root is the bass note, or bottom, of the chord the chord is said to be in root position.
Conventionally, the name of the note which is the root is used to denote the chord, thus a major chord built on C is a C Major chord.

 Chords in Inversion
Root position chords are generally used at the beginnings and ends of phrases, where greater stability is desired.
Notice that in first inversion chords, the root or the third of the chord is most commonly doubled (doubling is a term used to refer to when two voices are on the same pitch class).
In a pedal 6/4 chord use, the bass note remains the same, and the 6/4 chord is preceded and followed by the same, root position chord.

 Other Chord Family Members
The chord quality of the last two are the same - they both contain the seventh, and so are both dominant seventh chords, the difference being that the suspended one should really resolve - classically on to the A7 chord itself.
The qualities of these chords depends on the context in which they are used and the chord which lay around them - it is not always easy to identify the function by sight; rather by listening.
As with slash chords, the idea is to create these complex sounds with the minimum of fuss - and they are instantly identifiable, and leave nothing to the imagination as far as building the chords is concerned.

 Roots To Chords
A root note is the main note on which a chord is built.
It is the foundation, or root, of the chord.
To play the root note of any chord, just play the note after which the chord is named.

 chord substitution
The omitted/added root substitution exchanges the root of the given chord for a root a third or fifth higher (occasionally lower.) The substituted chord still retains several pitches of the original, implying the same harmony, but can also point toward different directions--both in key and function.
As the ii chord in the key of C, the D-7 (with its altered 5th) allows the progression to extend itself before progressing toward a dominant and eventual tonic.
The singing exercise should be in three stages: first sing the roots of the chords as they occur in the form, then sing the melody.

The Harp Reference: Jamming Over Chords
The root note, C, of the I chord, C7, is the same as the 5 (dominant) of the IV chord, F7.
In blues, we're mostly on the I and IV chords, with occasional ventures into the V. (I) C7: C E G Bb The I and V chords share the 5 note of the I chord (the G of the C7 chord) and the root note of the V chord (the G of the G chord).
So the C7 chord sits nicely between the F7 and G7, sharing the C note with the F7, and the Eb as the "blue note" flat 3rd; and the G note with the G7 chord, with the Bb as the G7 chord's "blue note" flat 3rd.

 Chord Theory for the Guitar
The notes of a triad are the root (or name of the chord) the third counting up from the root and the fifth counting up from the root.
Minor chords are the same as major chords except that the 3rd is lowered.
When the usual C chord is played the root, C, is played on the fifth string and an octave higher on the second string; the 3rd, E, is played on the fourth string and an octave higher on the first string; the 5th, G, is played on the third string.

 Wing Shape 31
Some wings have different chord lengths near the fuselage and at the tip.
We call the chord length near the fuselage the root chord, and the chord length at the end of the wing the tip chord.
Think of the wing like a tree, and the fuselage as the ground: the part of the tree closest to the ground is the root, and the part farthest away is the tip.

Finding the Mean Aerodynamic Chord of a wing
About a quarter of the chord at this point is the Center of gravity for the wing.
Draw a line that length BELOW the chord of the wing at the tip, in effect adding the root chord to the tip chord.
Extend a line from the root through the CG point to the tip, at right angles to the CL, and the airplane can be balanced anywhere along that line.

101 Things You Can Do With A Diminished Seventh Chord
A diminished seventh chord consists of a stack of minor thirds, or a diminished triad with an additional third on top.
In a common-tone resolution of a leading tone seventh, at least one chord tone is held in common with the chord of resolution while the other three notes of the seventh move by step.
Such chords invariably play a contrapuntal, or linear role, behaving as either a neighboring or passing harmony to the sonority that precedes or follows them.

Chords - 1000 Great Guitar Sites on the Web
Notes in chords are referred to by their note number, so that a single scheme can be used, regardless of the chord's root note, or the key and scale you're using.
You are now holding your first barre chord, F. This is essentially the same as the F chord you have learned in the open chords section, only the 1st finger barres all six strings instead of just the 1st and 2nd strings.
Seventh chords are found by adding a further 4th column of notes which give rise to so called dominant seventh, minor seventh and natural or major seventh chords and another special chord the diminished seventh with its own set of complications.

In music and music theory, a chord is three or more different notes or pitches sounding simultaneously, or nearly simultaneously, over a period of time.
The word chord is short for accord, from the Middle English word cord.
Every chord is given a specific name, based on the notes that constitute the chord and the distances, known as intervals, between them.

When a root note and a chord have been selected, the table below will display all the notes that are usually considered part of that particular chord, both where the root is C, and when transposed to the selected root note.
Similarly, chord built on degrees of a mode or scale are also defined here in relation to the first degree of that particular mode or scale.
Of course the chord is unaltered if all the indices in the notes of a chord are increased or decreased by the same integer.

From this point, the "root" or "basse fondementale" ("fundamental bass") - as it came to be known - was the defining factor for a chord's representation [30], at least most of the time for most people.
For example, one could speak of chord purity or complexity, or how ambiguous a section of chords are, as well as new insights into how the chords may function together.
Molly Gustin also devised a rather elaborate theory based on the harmonic series to determine the root/s of a chord [65], but she was rather heavily criticized by Arthur Komar in the "Perspectives of New Music" journal [64].
