Roots can be either (A morpheme that can occur alone) free morphemes or (A morpheme that occurs only as part of a larger construction; eg an -s at the end of plural nouns) bound morphemes.
Root morphemes are essential for (Formation of a word by means of an affix) affixation and ((chemistry) a substance formed by chemical union of two or more elements or ingredients in definite proportion by weight) compounds.
The root of a word is a unit of meaning (morpheme) and, as such, it is an abstraction, though it can usually be represented in writing as a word would be.
