Standard Stalinist accusations of conspiracies (see Great Purge) were accompanied by a crusade in the state-controlled mass media to expose pseudonyms.

As a 'rootless cosmopolitan' myself, I make no secret that I see collecting as many citizenships as possible as useful way to dilute the influence that states have over people.
But America is not primarily composed of rootless cosmopolitans, it is composed of Americans, a majority of whom think a certain way about what that means.

I *am* saying that in 1960, or 1950, or 1940, or 1930, or 1920 "rootless cosmopolitan" would have been instantly recognized as a code word.
One, the rootless cosmopolitan thing was kind of a throwaway jibe.

I doubt my ancestors were "rootless" in the way you suggest - it must've taken a great deal of courage to leave what they must have loved, so that they are their descendants could come to love other places that had the advantage of not being oppressive or poverty-stricken.
Is the fact that I consider myself a "rootless cosmopolitan" at odds with the deeply emotional ties I feel for the place of my birth in a rural area of southeast Kansas or smalltown Indiana where I spent most of my adolescence?

I have always felt strongly that being what Marx called a 'rootless cosmopolitan' was in fact a good thing.
I am not rootless at all, but rather a rooted in what James Bennett calls The Anglosphere.
Bennett, who has always said that the Anglosphere is much more than the so-called 'White Commonwealth', actually calls India 'The frontier of the Anglosphere', pointing out how many of the more useful English memes took root quite successfully there.

I've never quite been a rootless cosmopolitan - I'm a Jew, I have a Jewish heritage and education, and I'm too much of a Jew to ever be (or want to be) anything else.
However, what Ikram Saeed said in the comments about Hellenistic Jews facing the same potential identity crisis as cosmopolitan Arabs hit home, because a Hellenistic Jew is exactly what I am.
I enjoy mixing and matching traditions and accepting the best of other cultures, I like the diversity and mutual assimilation of the American melting pot, and I've always taken pride in being fully Jewish, fully American and fully Western.
