Ropata Wahawaha was a Ngati Porou war chief who rose to prominence during New Zealand's East Cape War and to senior command during Te Kooti's War.
Rapata Wahawaha was born about 1820 into the Te Aowera sub-tribe of the Ngati Porou, one of the major Maori tribes in the eastern regions of the North Island of New Zealand.
The hunt for Te Kooti was entrusted to two tribes, Ropata with the Ngati Porou and Kepa with the Wanganui Maori.

As the fighting in his own area died down Ropata and his Ngati Porou war band were called upon by the government to fight in other areas, most notably to assist the Ngat Kahungunu.
The first assault, led by Ropata, Porourangi and Lt Preece was unsuccessful despite which Ropata was awarded the New Zealand Cross for bravery and promoted to the rank of Major in the mlitia.

Ropata had requested the help Colonel Tom Porter as his second in command, apparently they had already soldiered together for quite a long time.

Became magistrate in the Waikato, warden and magistrate on the Thames goldfields and stipendiary magistrate in Auckland.
During the New Zealand Wars and the campaign against Te Kooti, he rose to the rank of captain in the Armed Constabulary, commanded the native contingent in the Urewera from 1870 to 1872 and was mentioned in dispatches three times.
WAHAWAHA, Ropata (1807-97) A skilful, ruthless major in the Native Contingent in the campaign against the Hauhau, winning the New Zealand Cross for action against Te Kooti at Ngatapa in January 1869, and later being awarded a Sword of Honour by Queen Victoria for his services.

Particularly incensed was a rising leader or war chief among them, Ropata Wahawaha.
However there were at least 200 armed men with the party, threat enough to the settlement which seemed to be confirmed by their building a Pa. Once again it fell to Donald McLean to assemble of force to deal with the threat and to organize the shipping to move his warriors into the area.
This was completed by about November 12, including Ropata and some 300 Ngati Porou.

Ropata has taken the more direct route from Opotiki on the Bay of Plenty coast and is attacking from downriver, the north.
Ropata approached Te Kooti’s camp from the north, silently tomahawking a surprised Ringatu sentry before rushing up the cliff face and surprising another 20 Ringatu, who ran to the pa. Ropata descended into the valley, splitting his force in two, Porter on the left, himself on the right (nearest the river).
Just after the battle Ropata summarily executed 19 of Te Kooti’s warriors in utu, the only deaths of the fight other than the sentry, and dumped their bodies into the river in a heap.

Early in 1870 Major Ropata Wahawaha named his friend Porter as the European officer he would like to accompany his force in its expedition into the Urewera mountains in pursuit of Te Kooti.
Porter was commissioned as a captain in the New Zealand Militia in June 1870 and appointed adjutant of the East Coast Militia and Volunteer District.
Porter acted as Ropata's staff officer, dealing with matters such as pay and supplies, and as one of his principal subordinates.

Te Kooti had many narrow escapes but he managed to stay ahead of his pursuers until mid August 1871 when the Arawa forces unexpectedly came upon his camp which was taken after a brief skirmish.

Major Ropata has long served the government too, but unlike Kepa, he hates Te Kooti with a passion, several of his own family having been murdered and left on the ground as “a portion to foxes” at Poverty Bay.
During the battle and the pursuit that followed, Kepa and Ropata captured 57 or more of Te Kooti’s men, 38 women and 26 children, and liberated 218 Whakatohea prisoners of Te Kooti’s.
Unlike Kepa and Topia, Ropata had a personal vendetta with Te Kooti for the murders of his relatives at Poverty Bay, and had to be restrained by the Whanganui chiefs from executing more.

Te Kooti had been unjustly imprisoned, escaped, founded a Christian religion called Ringatu, and led a guerrilla campaign, but Whitmore was helped by the leadership of Ropata te Wahawaha.
In November 1868 Te Kooti led a raid that massacred 33 Europeans and 37 Maori allies.
