Inca rope bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bridges of this type were suitable for use since the Inca people did not use wheeled transport - traffic was limited to pedestrians and livestock.
Part of the bridge's strength and reliability came from the fact that each cable was replaced every year by local villagers as part of their mita public service or obligation.
The greatest bridges of this kind resided in the Apurimac Canyon along the main road north from Cuzco.

 Suspension Bridges
Rope splicing is a very strong method of fixing a loop eye or joining two ends together; as the rope is pulled tighter, the spliced strands become more and more squeezed and locked into place.
The ropes should be positioned apart by about the distance from foot to shoulder of the largest person to use the suspension bridge.
If the lower rope is too near the ground then there is a possibility of actually touching the ground at the center of the rope bridge.

 Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge
Spanning a chasm some eighty feet deep is the famous Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, it's construction once consisted of a single rope hand rail and widely spaced slats which the fishermen would traverse across with salmon caught off the island.
The single handrail was subsequently replaced by a two hand railed bridge, the current, caged bridge was installed by the National Trust during Easter of 2000 as a further safety measure.
Primarily a 'seasonal' working bridge for the fishermen, since the demise of salmon fishing along the coast, the bridge is nowadays more widely used by passing visitor's and marketed as a tourist attraction.

 Suspension Bridge Technical Data
On small bridges this proved to be an expensive procedure and consequently placed the suspensiontype bridge at an economic disadvantage for the shorter span crossings.
The suspension bridge is inherently a flexible structure and in the majority of cases some form of stiffening must he incorporated in the design.
An important item to be determined by the computer of suspension bridge calculations is the free cable sag-the elevation at which the cables must be set when hanging under their own weight only, to make certain that the fullyloaded bridge will come k~ rest at the right elevation.

Slip the second trestle under the 3 long ropes so that the top of the trestle is about 10m from the 1st trestle, and the base is pointing at the 1st trestle.
Equally space the stringer ropes (~1 metre - 3ft apart) the entire length between the trestles and attach them by tying a "round turn two half hitches" to the handrail and a "clove hitch" to the footrope.
