Rope splicing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Rope splicing is the forming of a semi-permanent join between two ropes or two parts of the same rope by partly untwisting and then interweaving their strands.
Splices can be used to form a stopper at the end of a line, to form a loop or an eye in a rope, or for joining two ropes together.
The end of the rope with the splice is about twice the thickness of the rest of the rope.

 Glossary of Terms
Rope splicing is a very strong method of fixing a loop eye; as the rope is pulled tighter so the spliced strands become more and more squeezed and locked into place.
Rope splicing removes the worry of a knot becoming undone and a spliced eye is less bulky.
The center of the rope may be hollow, such as in a hollow braid, allowing for easy splicing; or it may have a center rope of parallel fibers.

 30 Hour Rope splicing
The only method of splicing a Long Case Clock rope I have seen published is to unlay six inches of rope at both ends, tie square knots at regular intervals, and then stitch up and down the joined ends to hold them together.
The rope is made up of twelve strands plus a centre core which is about the same diameter as the strands.
The rope is very "soft laid", which is necessary for the spikes of the clocks weight pulley to grip.

Because of the wide range of rope use, exposure to the several factors affecting rope behavior, and the degree of risk to life and property involved, it is impossible to make blanket recommendations as to working loads.
Ropes have lower tensile strengths at higher temperatures 30% (or more) lower at the boiling point of water (212°F) and continuing on down to zero strengths for nylon and polyester at 480°F and 300°F for polypropylene.
UV degradation is indicated by discoloration and the presence of splinters and slivers on the surface of the rope.

Splicing is used to join ropes together by interweaving the strands of the rope.
However, with a splice the rope is 85 to 90 percent as strong as the original rope.
Splicing should be used whenever there is a concern about safety or when the loop or joint is going to be left in the rope.

 Patent 4018039
Splicing of rope includes both the formation of a closed loop at one end, i.e., an eye splice, and the joining of two running lengths.
It is therefore a primary object of the present invention to provide a device for splicing rope, especially the modern synthetic types, wherein a hard rope end such as formed by a melt cutting operation passes through at least one opening formed in a running length of said rope.
This splice may be considered complete at this point or further operations may be carried out so as to form additional openings further down the running length of the rope R and the progressive workings of the end E therethrough in the same manner as hereinabove described.

This is accomplished by holding the rope at the top of eye and sliding the cover slack back from the knot towards the splice.

Samson's line of Tree Ropes are specifically engineered to maximize performance where ropes are expected to provide a margin of security for climbers working in the tree, running against bark and through crotches, support and control of descending loads, while providing a reasonable working life.
Because of the wide range of rope use, changes in rope conditions, exposure to the many factors affecting rope behavior, and the possibility of risk to life and property, it is impossible to cover all aspects of rope applications or to make blanket recommendations as to working loads.
In extreme cases, the force put on the rope may be two, three, or even more timess the normal load involved, Examples could be ropes used as a tow line, picking up a load on a slack line, or using rope to stop a falling object.
