Parishes: Ropley | British History Online
Ropley is a large parish with an area of 4,684 acres, situated 4 miles east from New Alresford, with a station 1½ miles from the village on the Bentley, Alton, and Fareham branch of the London and South-Western railway, which passes through it on the north-west.
A large portion of the parish of Ropley and the vill of ROPLEY itself formed part of the demesne lands of the manor of Bishop's Sutton, and thus belonged to the bishop of Winchester, as forming part of his liberty.
The earliest evidence of the manor of Ropley, which was held of the bishopric, is between 1304 and 1316, when Henry, bishop of Winchester, granted licence to William Gervays of Ropley to hear service in a chapel in his manor of Ropley.

But Ropley did at least play a notable part in the smuggling trade, some saying it was the real centre of smuggling in Hampshire in the 19th century, with villagers and gentry combining forces to defeat the best efforts of the excise officers.
Young Mr Duthy of Ropley House was also reportedly involved, using his father’s horses at night to help the smugglers, and on his father finding out he was ordered out of the house, but his sisters helped him out with money and food which they let down to him at night from their bedroom window.
Up until the mid 20th century most cottages in Ropley were still dependent on wells for water, or rainwater collected from the roofs, and oil or gas lamps for lighting.

 Ropley House
Maddock’s unpopularity was the fact that he was so strongly opposed to the smuggling “trade,” which was carried on largely and with a high hand in Ropley for many years.
He obtained a cart-load of the whisky kegs at Portsmouth, and was about to depart in triumph with these, when the custom-house “got wind of it,” and he found he was pursued.
He would not be baulked of his prize, and putting his horse to its full speed he galloped the 30 miles from Portsmouth to Ropley, eluded his pursuers, and arrived safely with his kegs, which were hidden in the big beech wood on Monkwood hill.
