  Rorqual - LoveToKnow 1911
RORQUAL, a whale of a long and elongated shape, with a small back-fin and a number of longitudinal pleatings or folds on the throat (see Cetacea).
The name rorqual refers to these folds, while the alternative title of finner, or fin-whale, marks an important difference between these whales (for there are several species) and right-whales.
The head is relatively small, flat and pointed in front, the whalebone short and coarse, the body long and slender, and the tail much compressed before it expands into the "flukes." Rorquals are the most abundant and widely distributed of all whales, being found in all seas, except the extreme Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Rorquals are the largest group of baleen whales, with nine species in two genera.
Rorquals take their name from a Norwegian word meaning "furrow whale": all members of the family have a series of longitudinal folds of skin running from below the mouth back to the navel (except the Sei Whale, which has shorter grooves).
Most rorquals are fairly strictly oceanic: the exceptions are Bryde's Whales (which are usually found close to shore all year round) and Humpback Whales (which are oceanic but pass close to shore when migrating).

Darren Naish: Tetrapod Zoology: From cigar to elongated, bloated tadpole: rorquals part II
The rostrum in rorquals is long and tapers to a point (though it is comparatively broad in blue whales) and, in contrast to other mysticetes, a stout finger-like extension of the maxillary bone extends posteriorly, overlapping the nasals and abutting the supraoccipital (the shield-like plate that forms the rear margin of the skull).
It seems that rorquals possess batteries of sensory organs within and around the buccal pouch: there are laminated corpuscles closely associated with the ventral grooves that might serve a sensory function, and located around the edges of the jaws, and at their tips, are a number of short (12.5 mm) vibrissae.
Rorqual baleen plates number between 219 to 475 in each side of the jaw (the number of plates is highly variable within species, with sei whales alone having between 219 to 402), and each plate ranges in length from 20 cm (in the minkes) to 1 m (in the blue).

Rorqual found an odd target while she was on patrol in the Adriatic.
Further south, while continuing her patrol, she sighted a floating battery of two 5-inch guns and an anti-aircraft gun, mounted on a lighter which was being towed by an armed tug.
The lighter could hardly be torpedoed, as she was of too shallow draft for the normal depth setting, and the only other weapon the Rorqual had was a single 4-inch gun.

 Adventures in the Adriatic
Her mines laid, the Rorqual proceeded on offensive patrol farther south in the Adriatic, there to encounter one of the most curious targets ever attacked by a submarine, a floating battery consisting of two 4 inch and a smaller anti aircraft gun mounted on a lighter.
The commanding officer of Rorqual, decided to attack with his one 4 inch gun, as the floating battery was of too shallow draft to be torpedoed and the armed tug towing it was not worth a torpedo.
It was a tough encounter though in its early stages the Rorqual, hitting the tug as she opened fire, gained a marked advantage, and was able to shift her target to the floating battery.

Rorquals take their name from the Norwegian word röyrkval, meaning "furrow whale".
It is the largest and the smallest types - Blue and Minke Whales - that occupy the coldest waters in the extreme south; Fin Whales tend not to approach so close to the ice shelf; Sei Whales tend to stay further north again.
However, the phylogeny of the various rorqual species shows the current division is paraphyletic, and may need to be adjusted.

To feed, Rorquals take in tons of water in a mouthful and, with their baleen, filter out the fish or krill.
Rorquals were heavily exploited by the whaling industry, especially during the 1960s and early 1970s, and so the population has been severely depleated.

Rorqual (from the Norwegian, rørhval) whales have extremely long, streamlined bodies with many longitudinal grooves along the skin of the throat.
A rorqual whale has a small dorsal fin and short (compared with other baleen whales) baleen plates.
This whale has characteristics of both rorquals and right whales: its head is not as disproportionately large as that of other right whales; it has a small dorsal fin; and it has two rather indistinct grooves along the skin of its throat.
