ROSCOMMON (County of), an inland county of the province of CONNAUGHT, bounded on the north by the county of Leitrim, on the north-west by those of Mayo and Sligo, on the south-west and south by that of Galway, and on the east by the counties of Leitrim, Longford, Westmeath, and Kings (Offaly).
Roscommon is partly in the diocese of Clonfert, partly in that of Tuam, but chiefly in that of Elphin.
The sessions for the former are held at Athlone and Roscommon ; and for the latter at Boyle, Castlerea, and Strokestown.

The Roscommon quarry at the centre of a planning controversy is still operating despite having no planning permission.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern became embroiled in the issue, when his constituency office wrote to the County Council, to ask it to delay the implementation of the enforcement order, because the quarry owner was ill.
Roscommon County Council Council is pursuing legal proceedings against the operators, but the quarry continues to operate.

TDs and the political parties are studying the details of a sweeping review, published yesterday, which recommends changes in 27 of the existing 42 Dáil constituencies.
The independent commission proposes a reconfiguration of the political map that would create an extra constituency in Co Meath and see Co Leitrim divided in two.
Speaking on RTÉ radio, the Sligo/Leitrim Fianna Fáil TD, John Ellis, indicated he might transfer to the new South Leitrim/Roscommon constituency in the next general election.

Fianna Fail's hopes of winning two seats in the new Roscommon-South Leitrim constituency at the next election could be severely dented by a plan to remove certain services from Roscommon County Hospital.
The HSE announced earlier this month following a review of services at both Roscommon hospital and Portiuncula hospital in Ballinasloe, some 33 miles away, that a joint surgery department would be created between the hospitals and all inpatient surgery would, in future, be carried out in Ballinasloe, leaving Roscommon to specialise in day-case surgery.
Una Quinn of the Roscommon Hospital Action Group said there was "mass outrage" in the county at the HSE's plan.

Alderman Bree said "I accept that the Constituency Commission is independent and impartial and is obliged to make recommendations according to the changing demographics in the country.
However the reality is that the increased number of three-seat constituencies and the reduction in five-seat constituencies will make it more difficult for the Labour Party and smaller parties to have representation in the Dail.

There will only be 40k votes in the constituency, and the complications of managing cross-county transfers will expose both parties to the risk of losing the 3rd seat to SF or an Independent.
FG and FF will run three candidates, one in Leitrim, one in North and one in South Roscommon; otherwise the North Roscommon FFer would be a shoo-in and FG's overall vote in the constituency would fall by about 3,000-4,000, thus ruining any chances of taking two seats here.
If you think North Roscommon are going to vote for Ellis or Reynolds ahead of a roscommon person you dont know the voters too well, Ming will be on the pigs back if that happens although with Creighton of SF if he gets the nod.
