SI.com - SI Writers - Mike Fish - Straight Shooting - Mike Fish: Rose confident his day will come - Friday July 25, ...
Rose desperately wants to get back into the game and went so far as to offer his managerial services -- down the road, of course -- to an owner who shares his passion for winning and putting fannies in the seats.
Rose long has lobbied for a second chance, but didn't have high hopes until meeting secretly with Selig in Milwaukee last November to discuss conditions of a possible return.
Rose is too strong-willed to show his angst, but friends know the stigma and being ostracized from the game eats away at him.

Do Fish Feel Pain   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
If the cerebral hemispheres of a fish are destroyed, the fish’s behavior is quite normal, because the simple behaviors of which a fish is capable (including all of its reactions to nociceptive stimuli) depend mainly on the brainstem and spinal cord.
From the previous explanation, it should be clear that fish behavior is a result of brainstem and spinal patterns of activity that are automatically elicited by the stimulation of being hooked, but that fish don’t have the brain systems necessary to experience pain.
Thus, the struggles of a fish don’t signify suffering when the fish is seized in the talons of an osprey, when it is devoured while still alive by a Kodiak bear, or when it is caught by an angler.

Wild Rose Cold Water Fish Hatchery
The Wild Rose timber demonstration forest planted with native white, jack and red pine is adjacent to the hatchery.
Fertilized coolwater fish eggs brought to the hatchery are put into incubators called "hatching jars." Water continuously flows from under the eggs so they remain slightly in suspension or "rolling." Excess water and dead or unhealthy eggs float to the top and run out of the jar over a spout.
Hatchery employees are responsible for all phases of hatching and rearing the fish.

Fish have relatively POOR eyesight and their sense of smell and their sensitive lateral line are relied on greatly to find food and avoid predators.
I don't believe that the fish have septicemia because each has a red streak on the tail (could be part of normal coloration) and all are gasping/succumbing at exactly the same time (not the pattern one would expect with infection).
I have been thinking that Rose could send me a sample and I could look at it for a more definitive diagnosis, though I'm not sure of the medium in which it should be sent, so as not to destroy the evidence (probably tank water would work).

"Believe pain when fish say, 'ouch'"
Specifically, Rose said, the primitive brains of fish never developed the areas of the cerebral cortex that enable higher vertebrates to experience pain.
Fish respond to stimulus all right, he said, but there is a distinct difference between this response and feeling pain.
Fish, as Rose points out, are way down the food chain -- oops, sorry -- evolutionary ladder in terms of the development of their neurological systems.

Fish Production Estimates Production capabilities depend on rearing space available, water volume and quality, type of fish reared, and to what size the fish are to be raised to.
Fish that have been raised in this facility would be used in native sport fish restoration programs in many parts of the state.
However, the hatchery would be instrumental in stocking native fish restoration programs, which would benefit not only the fish targeted by the programs, like arctic grayling, but also species which depend on those fish for part of their diet, like grizzly bears.

Honoring the ancient ones -- Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine
Lake sturgeon rank as Wisconsin’s largest and oldest fish: a record 195-pounder was speared in Pokegama Lake in Vilas County in 1979, a 170-pounder was caught with hook and line from Yellow Lake in 1979, and an 82-year-old was taken from Lake Winnebago in 1953.
The fish are held in tanks for a few days while they are hand-spawned; the eggs are then taken to the Wild Rose hatchery for raising.
When the fish are ripe, fish technicians massage out a few quarts of eggs from the females, place them in spawning jars, and add milt, or sperm, from male sturgeon.

Go Fish won acclaim in its initial release in 1994, probably because of its irreverence in gazing at the lives of a group of young lesbians in Chicago.

In many ways, the story behind the making of Go Fish, Rose Troche and Guinevere Turner's girl-meets-girl lesbian love story, is as interesting as the actual film.
This is certainly not a case of a low-budget independent movie flowing smoothly until the rights are bought by a distributor.
But the unique and humorous spin that Troche and Turner place on it is. Go Fish is a thoroughly engaging motion picture with a touching romance and a great deal of humorous commentary.

“Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery in Waushara County is slated for a major overhaul starting next year to allow the century-old hatchery to continue serving as the workhorse of the state’s fish stocking programs,” says Mike Staggs, who directs Department of Natural Resources fisheries management and habitat protection program.
The facility is particularly important for good fishing on Lake Michigan and its tributaries, where natural reproduction of popular trout and salmon species does not occur in Wisconsin waters.
The $24.3 million hatchery project was identified in a 2003 stocking study as the state’s highest priority for addressing the growing demand for fishing opportunities.
