Following the battle, in which the 10th Iowa Infantry had 3 killed and 37 wounded, the regimental flag and Gower's belt were sent to the State Historical Society of Iowa for preservation.
In 1949 the last Iowa member of the GAR died, and shortly after the records of the State office were transferred for preservation in the State Historical Society of Iowa.
He rose in the ranks to be given command of the 168th Infantry, 42nd Division during WWI (1917-1918).
