Michigan’s population declined slightly in 2006 but was only a few thousand short of 2005’s 10.1 million residents according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau estimates.
At the same time, Macomb County’s population continued to grow.”Michigan’s estimated population is essentially unchanged over the past two years,” said Kenneth Darga, Michigan’s state demographer.
The estimated population in Oakland County rose by about 5,000 between 2005 and 2006 to more than 1.2 million, while Wayne County’s decreased by 17,000 to less than 2 million.

Jackson-based Consumers Energy wants to build a 24.4 mile gas line from Oakland Township to Rose Township through portions of the Great Huron Swamp in Springfield Township and the Buckhorn Lake complex in Rose Township.
The route has been opposed by the townships and the Oakland County Board of Commissioners.
