Roseberry Topping is a distinctive hill on the border between North Yorkshire and the borough of Redcar and Cleveland, England, of which it has long been a symbol.
At 1049 ft (320 m), Roseberry Topping was traditionally thought to be the highest hill on the North York Moors; however, the nearby Urra Moor is higher, at 1490 ft (454 m).
Roseberry Topping can be seen from many miles away and was long used by sailors and farmers as an indicator of impending bad weather.

However, the shortest and most direct approach is from the car park at the south side of the village of Newton under Roseberry on the A173, midway between the rural towns of Great Ayton and Guisborough.
The next route starts from the top of the large blocks at the summit of The Slab.

Roseberry Well is marked on the current OS map (1: 25000 scale) on the hill side near the summit of Roseberry Topping, but on recent visits, no water source was visible at that location, so it appears the spring may have ceased to flow.
This is likely to have been the same well described by Elizabeth Gutch who noted a spring near the summit of Roseberry Topping, its waters being used as a cure for sore eyes.
An Odinsberg spring is mentioned in a legend attached to Roseberry topping (1) and it seems likely that Roseberry well was the "modern" name of this spring.

Just a few yards from the front door of the farm is this view of Roseberry Topping - "Cleveland's Matterhorn".
Certainly as a youth Cook would have seen and visited Roseberry Topping, although the view would not be as it is today.
I've climbed Roseberry Topping several times and if the weather is clear then although the summit is only 1,057 feet above sea level the views are wonderful.

There were wide open moorland views over to the east, with Roseberry Topping looming up on the left, now only a mile or so away.
Pathway repairs were in progress on the south side of Roseberry Topping, so a series of large white bags full of stone lined that path.
As the route goes to Roseberry Topping and then back again, I left my rucksack before dropping down to Roseberry Common and climbing the 80 metres from there to the top.

 Roseberry Topping, Where to park??
Hi Guys, Am thinking of getting along to Roseberry Topping at the weekend for some early morning shots.
Know where it is (can't miss it really!) but it looks a long way around so I was hoping to get a few tips on where to park etc, to get some decent images.
If you just want to go up to the top to take photos from there, then the quickest route is from Newton under Roseberry as described above.

The distinctive landmark of Roseberry Topping can be seen for many miles from around Cleveland and the North York Moors - its height slightly exceeds 1000 feet but because of its isolation and distinctive shape, it appears much higher.
Over the years it has been quarried for sandstone and mined for jet and ironstone - a combination of the underground ironstone workings plus surface erosion brought about the collapse of the west face in 1912 giving Roseberry Topping its present distinctive outline.
From the top there are several routes to choose to go back down - all can be clearly seen traversing the slopes - my advice is to take the least steep route possible which will be easier on the knee joints!
