This is a red (SIC) herring, as these votes were "red" tory votes in previous elections that came to their true Liberal home this time around (Joe Clark ring a bell?).
Approximately half of the seats in parliament are filled by the district vote, and half are filled by the party vote.
As to my "red herring" - the point is that anyone trying to imply the increase in LP votes in AB represents a movement to the left is being disingenuious.

Smitherman is credited with having the best organization of his field, having begun to prepare his campaign more than year before the election was called in order to overcome his relatively low name recognition.
Although this is Smitherman's first bid for electoral office, he has experience working in senior government posts at the city, provincial and federal levels.
