The Common Rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus) is the most widespread and common rosefinch of Europe, where it has spread westward from Asia.
Common Rosefinches breed from Sweden and Siberia to the Bering Sea; the Caucasus, northern Iran and Afghanistan, Pakistan and the western Himalaya, Tibet and China; to Japan between latitudes 25º and 68º.
In winter they are found from southern Iran to south-east China, India, Burma, and Indochina.

In 2003 I put a male and 2 female Clear Red Dimorphics and a male Pallas' Rosefinch in an un-planted outside aviary.
The male Canary paired with one of the hens and the Rosefinch paired up to the other hen.
Neither hen laid again as the rosefinch became very aggressive to the other birds and attacked the male canary.

A switch to an East/South-east wind produced immediate results with the discovery of a showy Lanceolated Warbler in the Gilly Burn in the morning and the field identification by two competent observers of a Blyth’s Reed Warbler in Gunnawark during the afternoon.
A Spotted Crake was found at Burkle, 2 Corncrakes were flushed in the south, a Stonechat was at Schoolton, a Yellow-browed Warbler was in Skinner’s Glig and an early Taiga Bean Goose was found in the Parks.
At least 2 Common Rosefinches were seen along with another new Barred Warbler.

 Primaeval Forests & Swamps Bird Watching Report
One of the last great tracts of virgin forest left in Europe, home to one of the world’s rarest mammals, the European Bison, we were fortunate to find one of these impressive animals, browsing at the edge of the forest one evening.
Moving north again the borderlands of Belarus gave us breeding Citrine Wagtail and Great Grey Shrike before we headed to the northern part of the Biebrza for Aquatic Warblers and finally ended the tour in the Scandinavian scenery of Poland’s "lake district" by the shores of huge Lake Sniardwy.
At the end of the trail swarms of children were visiting the small bison zoo.

The Vinaceous Rosefinch is a medium-sized finch, about 15 cm long.
The call sounds like "zi zi zi." Their diet consists primarily of small worms and seeds, though occasionally they will scavenge through rubbish piles to look for food, hence its nickname of "garbage bird.”
Female Vinaceous Rosefinches will often clean the area surrounding their nests which are constructed of moss and cobwebs.

If Jordan were to choose a national bird, I suggest it would have to be the Sinai Rosefinch.
Several, including the Sinai Rosefinch, can be seen in few other places in the world.
However, much has changed since Ostriches last roamed the Jordanian deserts, not least being the huge increase in the numbers of domestic sheep and goats that are eating their way through the natural vegetation.

A Spot-winged Rosefinch at Rishyap and a Crimson-browed Finch at Pelling were also important sightings from the area.
Day 4: A Dark-rumped Rosefinch, the usual Fulvettas and Sibias and flocks of Yellow-breasted Greenfinch were noted before we left Pelling.

 China 2004 trip
The trip was remarkably successful in finding the prize birds of these regions, including 3 endangered cranes, good views of 3 pheasants plus a snowcock plus a grouse and 3 partridges, endemic ground-jay and groundpecker, ten redstarts, 6 snowfinch, 5 rosefinch, Lammergeier, and Great Bustard.
However, my field impressions of behavior and song were that it was a rosefinch.
We did not know at the time that recent biochemical evidence (Groth 2000) supports the view that it is a rosefinch.

The main features of the tour were a visit to the huge lake and wetlands of Koko Nor, and the desert region beyond, followed by a long tour of the Tibetan plateau, crossing several high passes and visiting two forest reserves with somewhat different avifaunas.
A bird of rocky summits - undoubtedly the hardest-to-get rosefinch on the trip: we were lucky to see a pair feeding at close range.
We were all able to watch this little-known, restricted-range species as the birds fed for extended periods on wildflowers and gathered nest material.

The Ducks seem to have all departed with a few hundred remaining, mostly dominated with Shovellors.

This high-altitude region holds some very special, almost mythical, species: Tibetan Rosefinch, Tibetan Sandgrouse, Mongolian Ground-jay, Severtzov's Grouse and an impressive array of larks, rosefinches, snowfinches, leaf warblers and redstarts.
