 rosegarden - AlsaOpensrcOrg
Rosegarden is a piece of software which helps you write music compositions either in standard Western musical notation or in a graph-like "matrix" layout of notes -- a piano-roll.
A unique aspect of Rosegarden, in contrast to most other music composition software, is that it is being created by an international collaboration of software developers who are continually publishing new versions of the software every day.
Rosegarden runs on Linux (Rosegarden does not run in Windows) using the ALSA sound system so you need to have both Linux and ALSA installed first.

Rosegarden is written in C++, which Laurent describes as the "only viable choice" when building large desktop applications on Linux.
Rosegarden does a very tidy job, although it must also be said that sometimes it takes quite a lot of doing to get good results.

Rosegarden is a free general-purpose music composition and editing application for Unix and Linux with a matrix editor and a fully-featured MIDI sequencer.
I'd like to see Rosegarden's developers add the ability to scan a music piece and import the image or PDF file to the notation editor.
If Rosegarden is widely noticed, I expect people will migrate from Sibelius to Rosegarden for the same reason many migrate from MS Office to OpenOffice.org or StarOffice: one or two features might be absent, but the program can do just about everything they need.

As the folk tale goes, Laurin was extremely proud of his rosegarden, which was surrounded by a silken thread.
Laurin on the way out looked at the rosegarden and felt, that the roses had shown the knights were to find him, so he cursed his rosegarden, which turned to stone and it is only on some days in the twilight towards evening, that the glow of the roses can still be seen.
