JIM: Rosemary was a minor player in my own personal view of the Kennedy family; she was the one who was "retarded." Then in 1995, I stumbled upon a New York Times story (with a 1939 family portrait) about the Kennedy Foundation's support of people with disabilities.
Rosemary's story looms in the background of that effort, as does the fortune of her father.
Consider that Rosemary was difficult to manage, was a danger to herself and others, that Joe did not want her to be put away permanently in an institution, and, given the failure of everything else available in the medicine of the day, this new lobotomy procedure did offer some potential hope.
