Rosendale is situated within the southwest part of the Town of Rosendale.
The community was an incorporated village until it was dissolved by voter referendum in 1978.

The shape is roughly that of a trapezoid with the incorporated Village of New Paltz occupying an irregular shaped, 1.7 square mile section in the center of the community, on the east bank of the Wallkill River.
New Paltz is bounded by the Town of Gardiner on the south, the Towns of Rochester and Marbletown on the west, the Towns of Rosendale and Esopus on the north and the Town of Lloyd on the east.
From 1970 to 1990 the Town's average decreased from 3.33 to 2.52, Ulster County's decreased from 3.09 to 2.58 and the Villagers from 2.6 to 2.21.

That Rosendale and its environs were an important part of the railroads campaign for tourist dollars can be attested to by the fact that Rosendale is prominently featured in a wonderful piece of promotional literature produced by the West Shore Railroad in 1892 called Summer Excursions, Lake, River, Mountain and Seaside Resorts.
Seven miles from New Paltz, towards Kingston, on the Wallkill Valley Railroad, is Rosendale, famous throughout the length and breadth of the land for its cement.
Opposite the Rosendale train station (which was on the south side of the railroad bridge) William M. Barton was the proprietor of the Depot Hotel.

In New Paltz, the trail is owned by the village or the town, while in Gardiner it belongs to the Wallkill Valley Land Trust, Inc.

After graduating from Hamilton College in 1823 he clerked in the New York City law office of Col. Charles G. Haines and was admitted to the bar.
Lewis C. Beck in his report in Mineralogy of New York reported, “White’s quarries and kilns are the most numerous, and turn off about six hundred barrels of cement per diem.
The barrels would be marked H. The Newark and Rosendale Lime and Cement Company would operate and expand White’s cement works, at what had by this time become known as Whiteport, until it in turn, in 1902, sold its holdings to Samuel Decker Coykendall’s newly formed Rosendale Consolidated Cement Company.
