Improvisation and diplomacy have become key factors behind Roshan's expansion since the launch of the company, especially as it is non-Afghan and operating in a country where little can happen without a little baksheesh.
One of Khoja's main arguments in these situations is that Roshan is not only profit-orientated but also geared towards stimulating local economies that are brought within reach of its network.
Roshan, in turn, gets incremental cash from people who are typically unable to afford the one-off cost of a phone and subscription.

But, according to Roshan CEO Karim Khoja, the road to success for any new entrant will be a rocky one, and some distance from a simple business plan drawn up in an office several thousand miles away.
Since it began operations in July 2003, Roshan itself has been beset with difficulties that Khoja describes as coming as part and parcel of working in a country that is still suffering from continual violent instability and years of under-investment.
It is the manner in which Roshan has approached the Afghan market that has led to this employment effect, and in turn offered a greater assistance to the country's sustainable economy.
