Rosin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rosin varies in color, according to the age of the tree from whence the turpentine is drawn and the amount of heat applied in distillation, from an opaque almost pitchy fl substance through grades of brown and yellow to an almost perfectly transparent colorless glassy mass.
Rosin is a brittle and friable, with a faint piny odor; the melting-point varies with different specimens, some being semi-fluid at the temperature of boiling water, while others melt at 100°C to 120°C. It is very flammable, burning with a smoky flame, so care should be taken when melting it.
Rosin consists mainly of abietic acid, and combines with caustic alkalis to form salts (rosinates or pinates) that are known as rosin soaps.

When rosin cools it forms what is known as a glassy polymer, which, for all intents, is a fairly hard and un-reactive material, something akin to window glass, which is the classic glassy form of silicon dioxide or sand.
Rosin of the powdery sort that is noticeable on strings after about an hour or so of playing generally doesn't adversely affect the tone in the same fashion as does that cement-like material often found on the strings of an instrument the welfare of which is studiously ignored by a less-than-inspired teenager, for example.
Rosin is dissolved quite readily by xylene (very volatile, carcinogenic, therefore unhealthy to use, especially without adequate ventilation) and reasonably well by mineral spirits (which is a lot less volitile, therefore much safer health-wise, and doesn't smell).

Rosin, the ubiquitous accessory for any stringed-instrument player is actually a bit of a mystery to most musicians.
Rosin is drawn directly from living trees in a tapping process–in much the same way that maple syrup is collected (the process in no way harms the tree).
Since light rosin is harder and not as sticky as its darker counterpart, it is also preferable for the higher strings.
