The Roslyn that Onderdonk found in 1752 was a Dutch-English settlement called Head of the Harbor, and later, Hempstead Harbor.
Roslyn, which got its name in 1844 reportedly because it reminded some of the Roslin Castle area in Scotland, became a colony of artists and writers, attracted by the scenic harbor and William Cullen Bryant, a leading poet and publisher who settled there in 1843.

 Road Improvement For Roslyn Harbor
Last week, Roslyn Harbor Mayor Gerson Strassberg addressed the subject in a letter sent to village residents.
The road plan, the mayor continued, is in response "to damage from a particularly bad winter." Nearly all village roads, he added, will be involved in the repaving and repairing process, with new curbs also being installed.
The largest bulk of revenue will be generated by taxes, which the village hopes will bring in $522,505, which, as noted, sets the village's tax rate at 15.56 percent.
