  Clan ROSS
On the death of the Earl of Buchan and Ross, at the battle of Verneuil in France in 1424, the earldom of Ross reverted to the crown.
On the forfeiture of the Lord of the Isles in 1476, the earldom of Ross became vested in the crown.
In this way the earldom of Ross became separated from the chiefship of the clan, and it ultimately, after the forfeiture of John, Lord of the Isles and Earl of Ross, at the end of the fifteenth century, was conferred upon the second son of James III.

One of the finest authors of Scottish history Ross writes about how Scotland's history touches her people whether they reside in Scotland or are scattered around the world.
Canada's pride in multiculturalism and the verve with which the Canadian Scots celebrate their heritage results in what Ross describes as "an attuned sense of self." In relation to Canadian Scots, he states that a common culture matters, " A nation is a result of its own history".
Every country has it heroes, Scotland is no different and Ross's connection to Scotland today and her heroes of the past seem to create the very fabric of the Scottish experience.

Second, the focus of modem scholarship on themes of medieval kingdom-building, the Europeanization of Scotland in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and the relatively early emergence of Scotland as a unified kingdom under the Canmore kings, have tended to overshadow or obscure questions of resistance, alienation, and dissent.
Perhaps, then, if the Norman infiltration of Scotland is often regarded as a "peaceful Norman conquest" it can no longer be held to have been exclusively so, as demonstrated by the military actions of the Scottish kings against their northern foes.
Finally, the insurgents of the 1220s are also said to have arrived in the furthest limits of Scotland and, given the precedents of at least 1211 and 1215, it is likely that they too launched their invasion from a staging point beyond the kingdom.

 John Ross
Elected principal chief of the eastern Cherokee in 1828, Ross struggled valiantly to hold the ancestral lands of his people but was unable to withstand the constant pressure of the state of Georgia for removal.
Ross and the majority refused to acknowledge the cession, but resistance was unsuccessful, and in 1838–39 he led them on the long, hard journey to present-day Oklahoma.
Thousands died on the trip, known in Native American lore as the “trail of tears.” From 1839 until his death Ross was chief of the united Cherokee nation (the western Cherokee had migrated at the beginning of the century).

During his absence from Scotland he was deprived of the revenues of his bishopric and was reduced to great poverty.

This is a land of lochs and mountains, rich in myths and legends.
The name Ross, derived from Rois (meaning a headland) was probably first applied to promontories of land on the east coast and then came to be extended across the whole region to the west.
Although still Ross-shire, this region became known as Ross & Cromarty in 1698 when George MacKenzie, who owned lands throughout the area, succeeded in having his own lands recognised as a separate county of Cromarty.
