Ross Castle was the chief seat of the O'Donaghue Mors, hereditary rulers of this district and descendants of the ancient kings of Munster.
Although their lands were recovered around 1720, they were unable to regain possession of the castle, which had been taken over as a military barracks.
One of the main attractions for visitors in the National Parks of Killarney is Ross Castle.

Works done up to late 1984 included: conservation of the bawn walls and towers; restoration of the original entrance; major masonry repairs and the removal of modern infill in the smaller chambers; major repairs to vaults, windows and doors and the removal of a concrete roof which was endangering the building.
The delay necessitated in making the castle safe, both for those working in it and its long term preservation, was essential and I am surprised that the Deputy should criticise the necessary delay involved.
It is very important that the castle should be restored to a condition in which it will be safe for the next 300 years.

Ross Castle is often, wrongly, referred to as "Killarney Castle".
The Castle stands on a small isthmus jutting out into Lough Leane and was constructed in the 16th Century in typical Irish tower-house style (note the stepped crenellations, as opposed to English crenellations which are usually level).
Guided tours of the Castle operate throughout the summer months and it is one of the most familiar of all Irish Castles due to its position slap-bang in the heart of the tourist route.
