 Antarctic Explorers: James Clark Ross
Ross first thought it to be an ice-blink (a whiteness in the sky caused by the reflection of ice ahead) but as they approached they realized the ice-blink was actually a mountainous, snow-covered land.
Ross realized there was no possible penetration further as Ross stated that "we might with equal chance of success try to sail through the cliffs of Dover, as to penetrate such a mass".
Ross was delighted and took pleasure in the fact that their efforts had been "unattended by casualty, calamity, or sickness of any kind, and that every individual on both ships had been permitted to return in perfect health and safety to this southern home".

A sea (pronounced see) is a large expanse of saline water connected with an ocean.
The term is also used for large, usually saline, lakes that lack a natural outlet, such as the Caspian Sea and the Sea of Galilee.
The term is used in a less geographically precise manner as synonymous with ocean, as in the tropical sea or down to the sea shore, or even sea water referring to water of the ocean.

The variation physical environments in the Ross Sea are important analogues for past and future changes in climate and may be very helpful in understanding past and future changes in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and carbon throughout the southern ocean.
The regime in the southwestern Ross Sea (Region I) had relatively shallow mixed layers and was dominated by diatom growth, as evidenced by a silicate (Def(Si)) to NCP ratio (0.11+0.04) similar to the silicate to carbon ratio found in diatoms growing in temperate regions.
With the onset of the bloom in the southwestern Ross Sea, decrease observed in the nutrients and the carbon dioxide concentrations below the winter values is due primarily to dilution by ice melt and biological utilization.

FOG Exhibit 7, The Ross Sea Cores
FOG claims that the implication of these differences is that the Ross Sea was free of ice and the coasts of Antarctic was unglaciated when the source maps used by Oronteus Finaeus were charted.
Since FOG relies completely on Hapgood (1966) for his data and conclusions concerning the significance of the Ross Sea Cores of Hough (1950), then the claims by FOG concerning the interpretation of the Ross Sea cores of Hough (1950) are also incorrect.
Furthermore, without the Ross Sea cores as evidence, there appears to be a well defined lack of any physical evidence that Antarctica could ever have been mapped in an ice-free state during the last 40,000 to 100,000 years.

The coarse sand fraction of East Antarctic till is dominantly composed of angular intermediate to mafic lithic fragments, fine-grained quartz-rich detrital sediments, rounded quartz, rounded metamorphosed carbonate lithic fragments, angular pyroxene, and rounded feldspar grains.
Adjacent western Ross Sea till exhibits compositional similarities with East Antarctica tills with the exception that several western Ross Sea samples containing higher percentages of felsic and sedimentary lithic fragments.
Therefore, we conclude from the sand petrography of Ross Sea till that both the East and West Antarctic ice sheets contributed to the expansion of LGM-age ice into the central Ross Sea.

 Ross Sea Tides
We have two primary interests in Ross Sea tides: (1) the role of tides in iceberg calving and subsequent motion and interaction between new icebergs and the remaining ice shelf; and (2) the role of tides in mixing and cross-slope exchange processes at the shelf break and Antarctic Slope Front.
Tides in the Ross Sea are predominantly diurnal, based on both gravimetric data from the Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) [ Williams and Robinson, 1980] and numerical models [e.g., MacAyeal, 1984; Le Provost et al., 1998; Padman and Kottmeier, 2000].
Tide heights are largest in the eastern Ross Sea under the RIS but, even there, are much smaller than in the cavity under the Filchner and Ronne Ice Shelves in the southern Weddell Sea [ Robertson et al., 1998].
