Ross Stores Inc. has hired about 150 of the former Marshalls stores employees in Hawaii to work at the Ross Dress for Less outlets it plans to open in November at the recently closed Marshalls locations.
Ross Stores, which started in 1982 with half a dozen outlets in the San Francisco area and now has 299 stores nationwide, opened its first Hawaii store almost three years ago at Pearlridge Center.
The T.J. Maxx store was closed for good and the Marshalls stores at Hawaii Kai and Pearl Highlands were closed for conversion to Ross stores, as were the Kona and Kahului outlets.

Ross Stores (ROST:Nasdaq) reported fourth-quarter earnings Wednesday that beat Wall Street's slightly lowered estimates by 2 cents even though its same-store sales slid 1% compared with a 2% increase in the year-ago period.
Ross said it expects to earn 44 cents to 47 cents a share in its 2001 first quarter, while seven analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial expect the company to earn 45 cents a share.
In 2001, Ross plans to open 35 to 40 new stores, with 10% to 12% in its southeast market of Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Although department stores have been struggling for years, and some specialty-store companies, such as San Francisco-based Gap Inc., are trimming square footage, Ross and TJX continue expanding at a combined rate of 10 percent to 12 percent, according to a report released this month by Brian Tunick, an analyst with J.P. Morgan.
In addition, both Ross and TJX are spending $200 million to $250 million a year to buy back stock and both are paying dividends to shareholders, the report said.
