Highland Clearances: The Times Report - Sidebar - MSN Encarta
With potato famine after the mid-1840s, the failed crofting communities were broken up by landlords reluctant to offer poor relief, and emigration was actively encouraged.
The following report of the Highland clearances in Ross-shire (Rossshire in the article) and Sutherlandshire (both counties now part of the Highland and Western Isles regions of Scotland) appeared in The Times on May 20, 1845, at the start of this second phase of clearances.
In the subsequent decade clearances led to around 50,000 people emigrating from Scotland to British North America, and a further 16,000 going to Australia.
