The Rossano and Sinope Gospels have been dated on stylistic grounds to the middle of the sixth century, with the Rossano Gospels being thought to be the earlier of the two.
Further evidence of the association of the Gospel writers with both the earthly and heavenly dimensions of the liturgy appears, from the eighth century on, in illustrations to the Sacramentary, and later in its successor, the Missal.

The finest example of early Celtic book ornamentation is the famous copy of the Gospels known as the Book of Kells, of the latter part of the 7th century, preserved in Trinity College, Dublin: a miracle of minute and accurate workmanship, combining in its brilliant pages an endless variety of design.
When we contemplate, for example, the rude figures intended to represent the evangelists in early copies of the Gospels, their limbs contorted and often composed of extraordinary interlacings and convolutions, we wonder that the sense of beauty which the Irish artist indubitably possessed in an eminent degree was not shocked by such barbarous productions.

Gospel books and missals (books of prayers) were based on model manuscripts from Italy and Coptic Egypt.
The manuscripts contained architecturally decorated canon tables, lists of the Gospels' parallel passages, and portraits of the four Evangelists with their symbols.

Werner Kelber states that in the gospels, particularly the gospel of Mark, it is evident that oral and literate traditions are antithetical.
He adds that "the gospel’s reserved attitude toward sayings, its displacement of all oral authorities…and the silence it ascribes to the risen Lord are all features that go against the grain of basic oral impulses,"(Kelber, 207).
The gospels were illuminated by artists from a traditionally oral culture, producing a style of decoration that reverberated throughout Europe.

Also, some of the events common to all of the Gospels appear in a different order in John's narrative: The cleansing of the Temple, for example, appears almost at the beginning of John (2:13-25), but in the Synoptics it is put after Jesus' triumphant final entry into Jerusalem.
In the liturgical sense, the term Gospel is applied to the short selections from the four Gospels that are read or sung in the Roman Catholic Mass and the Anglican Communion service, between the Epistle and the creed.
The Gospel selection now used for each day is determined by the order of worship set forth in the missal or, according to certain rules, is one chosen by the celebrant from a special lectionary.

For the development of Byzantine art the inherently conservative medium of Illuminated Manuscripts had a particular importance in preserving ancient traditions.
Only a handful of the magnificent books produced in the pre-Iconoclastic period survive, of which the Rossano Gospels (Archiepiscopal Museum, Rossano, Italy), and the famous Vienna Genesis manuscript (Nationalbibliothek) are the outstanding examples; both contain many separate miniatures painted on purple parchment and may be dated to the 6th or 7th century.
Secular books were also profusely illustrated, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan preserving a text of Homer's Iliad (c.500) and the Vienna Nationalbibliothek a pharmaceutical manual, De materia medica (512), by the Greek physician Dioscorides.

9 The standard iconography pairs David and Solomon. David is shown alone in Psalters, in his guise as the inspired poet, while Solomon, when seen alone, is always shown as king. The earliest representations of David as King are found in the Early Byzantine Sinope Gospels and Rossano Gospels.

What is said to be unusual about Renaissance paintings depicting the Last Supper...
Peasy, this question is so general that it's just about impossible to answer.
Some people might say, "Well, a meal at that time would have involved the participants reclining on couches" (the Gospels do mention reclining), whereas most -- though not all -- depictions of the subject involve a table (often with Judas sitting across from Christ and the other Apostles).
Very early manuscript paintings do sometimes involve reclining, but I can't find a good one on the web (I think there's one in the Rossano Gospels in Calabria).

The crucifixion and resurrection as the decisive moments for the gospel message, and the subsequent mirroring of those events in the experience of persecution and martyrdom for the early church, forced an encounter with life dependent on a violent encounter with death.
The literary expression of this paradox was profoundly articulated in the stylized form of the martyr's passion.
