Topic: Rostrum of corpus callosum

[No title]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
The lamina rostralis is a thin, non-commissural, layer that connects the rostrum of the corpus callosum to the lamina terminalis.
Dissection of adult human brains demonstrated that the rostrum of the corpus callosum passes posteriorly from the genu, diminishing in thickness, and is prolonged posteriorly as the lamina rostralis.
The rudimentary corpus callosum is bordered posteriorly by the fornix and anteriorly by a semivertically oriented lamina rostralis.

The pericallosal artery ends near the splenium of the corpus callosum as the posterior pericallosal artery, which continues as the posterosuperior choroidal artery in the roof of the third ventricle.
The pericallosal artery anastomoses with the posterior cerebral artery by the parietooccipital artery on the cingulate gyrus above the splenium of the corpus callosum.
The pericallosal arterial complex vascularizes the region of the corpus callosum and the anterior two thirds of the medial and superomedial aspects of both hemispheres.

 Sulcus of The Corpus Callosum
The sulcus of the corpus callosum is a slit-like fissure that separates the white matter of the brain from the overlying cerebral cortical substance.
It starts below the rostrum of the corpus callosum and then encircles the convexity of the callosal trunk to finally curve around the splenium.
Immediately surrounding the corpus callosum and separated from it by the callosal sulcus is the "cingulate gyrus."

Position and Boundaries of the Cavities: The corpus callosum defines the anterior, superior and posterior limits of the two cavities which, when not continuous, are separated from each other by the anterior limit of the fornix as it courses obliquely backward and upward from the anterior comissure to the body of the corpus callosum.
Being of congenital origin, the two cavities are doubtless dependent on the development of the corpus callosum and the fornix.
The cavum vergae has the following boundaries anteriorly, the anterior limb of the fornix, superiorly, the body of the corpus callosum, posteriorly, the splenium of the corpus callosum, inferiorly, the psalterium (lyra davidis) and hippocampal commissure, the fibers of which bridge the space between the diverging posterior pillars of the fornix.

 Corpus Callosum
In the 18th century, the corpus callosum was considered the site of the soul (Maurice Ptito), and in the early 20th it was assigned the mere role of preventing the cerebral hemispheres from collapsing onto each other.
The corpus callosum is undoubtedly the most important commissure to connect the two hemispheres, not only by virtue of its size, but also due to the wealth of its neural connections.
The adjacent somatosensory cortex projects fibers through the anterior half of the corpus callosum whereas axons arising from auditory regions pass through the posterior two-thirds of the corpus callosum and the dorsal splenium.

The part between the genu and the splenium is the body of the corpus callosum.
Corpus callosum = the "tough body" - it is 'harder' than the rest of the brain substance because of the compact arrangement of fibres.

The corpus callosum is the main transverse tract of fibers that connects the two cerebral hemispheres.
The primary function of the corpus callosum is to integrate motor, sensory, and cognitive performances between then two hemispheres of the brain.
The anterior portion of the corpus callosum is the genu, which curves ventrally and forms the rostrum.

The corpus callosum should also be identified as the particular region such as “splenium of the corpus callosum” or “body of the corpus callosum” – using just “splenium”, “body”, or “corpus callosum” is not acceptable.
The cortical area under the rostrum of the corpus callosum, appearing as a ventrocaudally-turned continuation of the gyrus cinguli, is a part of the rhinencephalon.
septum pellucidum is the thin double-layered membrane which covers the triangular space between the genus of the corpus callosum and the anterior columns of the fornix.

The corpus callosum transmits interhemispheric cortico-cortical fibers deriving mainly from pyramidal neurons in layer III of the association cortices.
In this study total and regional size of the corpus callosum as well as the volumes of the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes were evaluated in 38 patients with AD (NINCDS-ADRDA criteria) using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging.
Within the AD group, rostral parts of the corpus callosum were significantly (p <0.05) correlated with the frontal lobe volumes, parts of the midbody were correlated with the temporal lobe volumes, and posterior callosal measures where correlated with the parietal lobe volumes (table).

Pathophysiology: Dysgenesis of corpus callosum is usually a sporadic occurrence, although the incidence is increased in patients with trisomy 18, trisomy 13, and trisomy 8.
When the corpus callosum is absent, the cingulate gyrus is inverted, the normal cingulate sulcus is absent, and the medial cerebral sulci radiate toward the midline in a radial configuration.
Lipoma of the corpus callosum is demonstrated as a highly echogenic mass in the region of the corpus callosum.

The paraterminal gyrus is closely applied to the anterior surface of the lamina terminalis, and is separated from the cingulate gyrus by a shallow furrow.
Beneath the splenium of the corpus callosum, the parahippocampal gyrus bifurcates.

Just inferior to the genu and rostrum of the corpus callosum is a region of medial face cortex called the septal area.
If the bisection of the brain was exactly on-center, there will be a membrane extending ventralwards from the body of the corpus callosum, the septum pellucidum, which separates the two lateral ventricles from each other.

The anterior commissure (note this is a different structure than the anterior white commissure of the spinal cord) connects anterior regions of the two temporal lobes; the corpus callosum connects most other regions of the two hemispheres.
For instance, fibers in the posterior or splenium of the corpus callosum interconnect the occipital and posterior temporal cortices on the two sides.)
For now, just remember that either a white matter structure (like the corpus callosum) or a gray matter structure (like the caudate nucleus) can form part of the wall of a ventricle.

The cingulate sulcus begins below the rostrum of the corpus callosum and arches in front of the genu of the corpus callosum, about a finger's breadth distant from it.
Above the splenium of the corpus callosum, the cingulate sulcus turns abruptly upwards to reach the superior margin of the hemisphere.
Posteriorly, it becomes very narrow under the splenium of the corpus callosum and is continuous with the isthmus, which separates the splenium from the calcarine sulcus or fissure.

Only the highly hypnotizable subjects (HHs) who eliminated pain perception were included in the present study.
These HHs, who demonstrated more effective attentional and inhibitory capabilities, had a significantly (P < 0.003) larger (31.8%) rostrum, a corpus callosum area involved in the allocation of attention and transfer of information between prefrontal cortices, than low hypnotizable subjects (LHs).
These results provide support to the neuropsychophysiological model that HHs have more effective frontal attentional systems implementing control, monitoring performance and inhibiting unwanted stimuli from conscious awareness, than LHs.
