Article from the Roanoke Times Neighbors Section - Thursday July 27,2000
Mos of the Roanoke Valley Garst's are descendants of Frederick, who built a log house on Mason Creek and lived there until he died in 1842 at the age of 90.
Garst traces his ancestry back to Johann "John" Nicholas Gerst, who was the first of the family to arrive in Philadelphia fro Germany in 1749, aboard the ship Issac.
In Roanoke, the Garst name is familiar not only because of street signs but also because for almost 40 years, four Garst brothers ran one of the largest dairies in the area.
