IPT Journal - "Biases of Retrospection"
Retrospecting, they believed that their attitudes nine years previous were very close to their current one, much closer than they in fact were.
This bias was so strong that an equation set up to predict subjects' recall of their 1973 attitudes gives almost all weight to their 1982 attitudes, and virtually none at all to the attitudes they actually expressed in 1973 (with the important exception of the students' overall liberal versus conservative ratings).
It is possible, for example, that when the depression-prone people become depressed, their memory of their parents' behavior loses the "rosy glow" that appears to be a concomitant of "good mental health," and that the reports are in fact more accurate than when the people are not depressed.

Retrospective reports are less valid than concurrent observation, although an exception is worth noting: waiting for the rosy afterglow of a newly completed therapy to dissipate, as the CR study does, may make for a more sober evaluation. The retrospective method does not allow longitudinal observation of improvement across time in the same individuals.
Retrospective observation is a flaw, but it may introduce random rather than systematic noise in the study of psychotherapy effectiveness.
But retrospective reports of emotional states will always be with us, since even in a prospective study that begins with a diagnostic interview, the patient retrospectively reports on her (presumably) less troubled emotional state before the diagnosis.

Retrospective Conversion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Retrospective determinism is the logical fallacy that because something happened, it was therefore bound to happen.
For example: :''When he declared himself dictator of the Roman Republic, Julius Caesar was bound to be assassinated sooner or later.'' This argument gives no logical grounds to conclude Caesar's assassination was the only possible outcome, or even the most likely outcome of the circumstances.
This fallacy is often used as a build-up to a hasty generalization: because something happened in given circumstances, it was not only bound to happen, but will in fact always happen given those circumstances.

If retrospection was a fatal flaw, CR would have given up the reader’s survey, ethod long ago, since reliability of used cars and satisfaction with auto lines, physicians, and insurance companies depends on retrospection.

And although she could not smile, it filled her with sweet emotion to see the beautiful child, so plump and rosy, with his mouth still wet with milk, whose gaze had been arrested by the sunbeam full of dancing motes.
In this retrospection she was clearly conscious of the gradual change that had taken place within her.
During the first few weeks she had suffered from a fissure, and even now her breast was sensitive; but she smiled, notwithstanding, with that peaceful look which mothers wear, happy in giving their milk as they would give their blood.

It is, surely, impossible for us, standing ninety-three years later at the end of that twentieth century, to read these words without sensing the enormous contrast with what has actually come to pass in our times.
However, it is not only the calendrical vantage point of the approaching centenary which would prompt such a mood of retrospection.
For the apparently sudden and complete collapse of historical communism, culminating in the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, has generated a much deeper sense of an ending, of a historical period now closed and moving irrevocably into the past.
