The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, was formed on 23 February 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth.
Rotary's popularity spread throughout the United States in the decade that followed; clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York.

Rotary International president Carl Wilhelm-Stenhammar said during his visit to the Philippines on October 20 that in Africa “in the nineties, reports of polio cases totaled about 1,000 a day.
So fervent is Rotary International in its antipolio campaign that according to Stenhammar, by the time the world is certified polio-free, Rotary’s contributions to the global eradication effort would exceed the $600-million mark.

Lambert, then one of the leading businessmen of Manila and president of Lambert Sales Co., inspired by what he had heard of Rotary, started to correspond with President John Poole of the International Association of Rotary Clubs, now known as Rotary International.

Reminder from Rotary International: While Rotary districts and clubs are exempt from paying federal income tax, the law does require Rotary clubs to file an annual information return on IRS Form 990, on or before the 15th day of the 5th month following the close of the annual accounting period (November 15th).
The project is a partnership between CARE International and Rotary District 5030, and will provide a unique opportunity for Rotary clubs in District 5030 to make a lasting impact on 21,000 people affected by the devastating earthquake in late 2005.
Rotary is currently running a Public Image Campaign in North America, to increase awareness of the organization and encourage those leaders with a passion for service to join.

As a prelude to its efforts in the international field, a group of 16 persons from the Reading area, Rotarians and their wives, traveled as a body in the year 1953 to Reading, England, to be guests there of that city during Coronation Week.
During the International Convention there, attended by about 35 Rotarians from the Berks County area and in the same year it instituted Rotary meetings on the Holland-America liner "Statendam" on her maiden voyage eastward from New York, through the presentation of a lectern and a gavel.
