Rotary encoder - SensorWiki   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A rotary encoder is an electromechanical switch used as an angular position sensor.
Relative rotary encoders often have additional outputs, such as inverted quadrature outputs and a command pulse (a logical XOR of the quadrature outputs).
Rotary encoders are differentiated by their environmental sealing, axial and radial force ratings, maximum rotational speed, pulses per revolution, and output logic type (CMOS, TTL, etc.).

 Rotary encoder - Patent 4806837
The present invention relates to a rotary encoder, and in particular, to a link structure of a rotary body (a recording medium) on which positional information is formed and a drive shaft driving a rotary motion of the rotary body.
When using the rotary encoder, the rotary body must be directly linked to a driving shaft such as a drum shaft or a motor shaft depending on the detection object (for example, a drum or a motor of a copying machine) of which the rotary angle is to be measured.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a rotary encoder which facilitates the installation to link the rotary body with the driving shaft and which is configured in a space-saving fashion and hence is suitable for miniturization of the size thereof, thereby solving the problems of the prior art technology.

AMCI : Rotary Encoders : Rotary Encoder Applications
Perhaps the most common rotary encoder application, motor feedback requires that an encoder is either mounted directly to the motor, or indirectly using a measuring wheel or chain-and-sprocket arrangement.
An encoder mounted to the roller would reflect this position and could report to a controller how much material had been fed through the roller.
Using a rotary encoder to determine the position of a unit relative to a known point, and then to determine the unit's speed relative to that mark, is referred to as registraion mark timing.

Normally, these encoders would be connected with their common terminal at ground potential and both the A and B channel outputs pulled up to VCC through resistors.
If you needed to monitor numerous rotary encoders, this scheme might not be ideal because most microcontrollers have only one or two interrupt inputs, limiting you to that number of encoders.
A rotary encoder is detented if it can only come to rest at the number of positions per turn it was designed to encode.

Measurement Computing PCI-QUAD04 Incremental Encoder :: Measurement Computing (Formerly Computer Boards) (xPC Target)
For example, a rotary encoder typically reaches the index at one particular position in its range of motion.
For example, if Index input resets counter is selected, and a rotary encoder has 1024 counts per revolution, and a Count Limit or Reset Value value of 5000, a full clockwise revolution of the encoder increments the counter to 6023, at which the index is reached.
For a rotary encoder, the number of revolutions is the number of output counts divided by the number of counts per revolution.
