Rotary snowplow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A rotary snowplow from the Oregon Short Line on display at the Mid Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom, WI.
The rotary was invented by a Canadian dentist in 1869, but a prototype wasn't built until the Leslie Brothers constructed one in 1883.
Early rotaries had steam engines inside their carbodies to power the blades; a few are still in working order, and in particular one on the White Pass and Yukon Route in Alaska performs annual demonstration runs through thick snow for the benefit of photographers and enthusiasts.

Snowplow ON was based in Salida for use on Marshall Pass and Poncha Pass, as well as the Monarch branch, and occasionally on the lines from Gunnison (Baldwin, Floresta and Crested Butte branches).
Working on an operating steam rotary snowplow was tough because of the vibrations caused by the spining snow-cutting wheel, the deafening noise of the exhaust and the rough ride of the plow which was devoid of any suspension.
Snowplows OM and OY remained in use on the D&RGW until the end of its narrow gauge operations in 1968 (after that, only tourist operations remained on the Durango - Silverton line, where the rotaries were not used).

McCloud Rails - 1952 Rotary Plow
The rotary plow employed a giant rotating plow blade that enabled the machine to literally chew through snow drifts, with the snow thrown up to 200 feet away from the rails.
However, a rotary came east at least as far as Bartle, and possibly all the way to Car A, in 1952, and in March 1969 after a series of storms that dumped 20 feet of snow on the railroad a rotary plowed all the way into Pondosa.
The McCloud borrowed SP Rotary #208 in early 1969 to clear the railroad of 20 feet of snow.
