It is often best drunk when young and can be used to produce a rosé or sparkling wine.
It has no relationship with the Rotburger variety bearing a nearly similar name which is also known as Zweigelt.

It is a crossbreed of St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch and was introduced in 1922 by Professor Dr. Fritz Zweigelt at the Bundeslehranstalt für Wein- und Obstbau (federal college for wine and fruit growing) in Klosterneuburg.
He originally called it Rotburger, but soon everybody referred to it als Zweigelt, and so the professors name became a synonym for his vine crossbreed.
The variety does not have high demands on soil or climate conditions and is resistant against average winter frost.

'Rotburger' sometimes is used for Zweigelt, and the most common name change is 'Zierfandler' which takes the name of 'Sp¦trot' when vinified in combination with Rotgipfler (very tradinional in Gumpoldskirchen), so the wine is called 'Sp¦trot-Rotgipfler'.
