For example, when learning the Latin alphabet, the vocabulary of a foreign language or the conjugation of foreign irregular verbs, since they have no inner structure or their inner complexity is too subtle to be learned explicitly in a short time.

 Review: Machine Learning
Learning is a very general term denoting the way in which people (and computers) increase their knowledge and improve their skills.
Learning by Taking-Advice, in which the information provided by the environment is too abstract or general and, thus, the learning element must hypotesize the missing details.
Learning by Analogy, in which the information proveded by the environment is relevant only to an analogous performance task and, thus, the learning system must discover the analogy and hypothesize analogous rules for its present performance task.

Constructivism is an approach to teaching and learning based on the premise that cognition (learning) is the result of "mental construction." In other words, students learn by fitting new information together with what they already know.
Constructivists believe that learning is affected by the context in which an idea is taught as well as by students' beliefs and attitudes.
Learning is influenced by the environment, culture, and climate.

Learning can be described as normally a relatively permanent change that occurs in behaviour as a result of experience.
Learning by Chunking : Chunking is a process where a sequence of actions are put together and treated as a whole to perform a particular task.
This form of learning is not a solution to the overall learning problem but it provides a useful technique, either in situations where very little knowledge is available or in programs in which it is combined with more knowledge-intensive methods.

Meaningful Learning   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Meaningful learning refers to the concept that the learned knowledge (lets say a fact) is fully understood by the individual and that the individual knows how that specific fact relates to other stored facts (stored in your brain that is).
Rote learning is where you memorize something without full understanding and you don't know how the new information relates to your other stored knowledge.
When the student rote learned these facts, the brain stored them as distinct, unrelated knowledge that can only be recalled individually (one fact at a time).

In language learning, grammar and the parts of speech are not taught until children have developed considerable skill in thinking, speaking, improvising (conversing), reading, and writing in their native tongue.
For most efficient learning, ideally students should not be introduced to theoretical understanding until they have achieved all previous levels of discrimination and inference learning to the extent that their music aptitudes will allow.

Homeschool World: Practical Homeschooling Articles: The Importance of Rote Learning
The true purpose of rote memorization in education is to create automaticity, so that, for example, when a child sees a letter or group of letters he or she automatically says the sounds.
But what is totally ignored by these educators is the fact that rote learning is the easiest and most efficient way to instill knowledge by memorization so that it forms a solid foundation on which to build an intellectual superstructure.
Rote learning is also important in learning to read, for the most important task in learning to read an alphabetic writing system is to develop a phonetic reflex, which is easy to do by drilling the learner in the letter-sound combinations.

This is a commonsense view of learning that has implications for how to teach--such as presenting information to learners in books and lectures--and how to assess--such as testing to see how much of the presented material students can remember (Mayer, 2001).
The revised Taxonomy is based on a broader vision of learning that includes not only acquiring knowledge but also being able to use knowledge in a variety of new situations.
The first exemplifies what might be called no learning, the second, rote learning, and the third, meaningful learning.

Telegraph Blogs: Foreign: Richard Spencer: April 2006: Rote learning works
I have never regretted learning my times table the traditional way: both useful in itself and, of course, a foundation for logic and grammar too.
I noticed Richard says he is a ‘rote learning man’, but then this is followed by a multitude of clauses, which renders his initial statement redundant up to a point; though who would disagree that learning one’s timetables by rote is not a good idea?
I am sure though that Richard is being a bit tongue-in-cheek when he states that reciting the dates of Kings and Queens, or leaning multiple tables contributes to an ordered mind, or even provided a basis for logic.

Learning rudimental drumming by rote - Authentic Campaigner Website & Forums
Some drummers of volunteer militia units learned their craft in this manner, and they learned it "on the job." Militia drummers were often taught by a drum major who had been trained at one of the "Schools for Practice" or by an experienced drummer who happened to be in their ranks.
Learning the rudiments by rote (memory/practice) is just as authentic as being able to read the music from the book.
The most important thing is to learn the rudiments, you can learn to read music and you can perform the music but unless you have learned each rudiment you cannot perform this music correctly.

Memory and the Importance of Review
When we know how we learn best in terms of our learning style and preferences and are able to apply appropriate study techniques, we are better able to attend to, take in, and process information in various learning situations.
Rote learning means learning through repetition, which is mechanical and requires little understanding (learning multiplication tables).
Learning through understanding involves learning and remembering by understanding the relationships among ideas and information (remembering main ideas and supporting details from a lecture because you understand the concepts and relationships between ideas).

Still, it is critically important to meaningful learning because it usually forms the basis/linkage by which new material being learned is "tied to" schemata/structures, and it provides a background for understanding.

Ausubel's receptive learning/expository teaching says that the job of a teacher is to select what is to be learned, structure the environment to promote learning, use materials that are appropriate to the students' levels and are content-specific (e.g., deal with the information students are to learn), and are presented in an organized manner.

In Defense of Memorization by Michael Knox Beran, City Journal Summer 2004
The memorization and recitation of the classic utterances of poets and statesmen form part of a tradition of learning that stretches back to classical antiquity, when the Greeks discovered that words and sounds—and the rhythmic patterns by which they were bound together in poetry—awakened the mind and shaped character.
Through these conversations, the teacher comes to understand what the learner wants to learn.” Kids, in other words, should be free to do as they please; the teacher, in the role of “guide on the side” rather than “sage on the stage,” should cater to their whims; anything else is galley slavery.
For progressive educators, to require students to recite “Daffodils” or memorize the Gettysburg Address is a relic of a “drill and kill” culture that inhibits the development of the self and is the educational equivalent of a chain gang.

Education Terminology Every Parent Must Understand
The child will learn when he is "ready." This term, according to Hirsch, is "devoid of scientific meaning and lacks scientific authority," especially as millions of kids across the world have been exposed to and benefited from early hard work.
Hirsh agrees that discovery learning plays a vital role in a child's education, however, he describes two serious flaws in using this method exclusively: (1) Students sometimes miss the discovery they were supposed to make and sometimes even make incorrect discoveries.
Rote learning used to mean asking an entire class to recite in unison answers to set questions, whether or not they understood the meaning of the question or the answer.
