Most of the biological research at Rothera is based in a new laboratory that replaced one destroyed by fire in September 2001.
Earlier this season at Rothera, one of the BAS planes was flipped on to its roof by a freak gust of wind when it attempted to land.

After several penguins were worked up, the team headed north in the zodiac to meet the ship at Rothera at 1600, and to join everyone for the social events of the evening.
You may have wondered about the several days of absence of pictures of the day...Tonight the committee chose pictures that will come in three messages to show you where we were and some of what we have been doing.
Those of us that got off the ship were given a tour of the station and a chance to learn some of what's going on at Rothera while scientists on the ship were cross calibrating their instruments and comparing results from the two sites.

The annual occupations of the Drake Passage SR1b section are normally combined with supply runs to the BAS research station at Rothera, on the Antarctic Peninsula.
The RaTS observations are made from an inflatable boat during the austral summer, or using a sledge (with deployment through an ice hole) during the austral winter.

A plane carrying Dr. Ronald S. Shemenski was due to depart from the British Antarctic Research station at Rothera en route to Punta Arenas, Chile.
Shemenski rested overnight at Rothera, Raytheon officials said, before the six-hour flight to Punta Arenas, where he was to board a commercial plane to travel to Denver.

Flying into the pitch fl of the polar winter, the eight-seat Twin Otter concluded its 10-hour flight from Rothera base on the Antarctic peninsula across from Chile to the pole.
Tuesday the Twin Otter passed the point of safe return, which means it didn't have enough fuel to return to Rothera, about 1,100 miles behind them, or any other location with even the smallest base.
The aircrew will remain on the ground at least another 10 hours to ensure they are sufficiently rested before attempting the return flight to Rothera.

Shemenski, 59, has been diagnosed with inflammation of the pancreas, a potentially life-threatening ailment, though he was reported by doctors to be in stable condition.

Measurements taken during the austral summer of 2002-2003 revealed that the Rothera polar mesospheric clouds were much weaker, less frequent and not as high as those observed at the South Pole.
“The weaker polar mesospheric clouds at Rothera may be related to differences in temperature and water vapor in the mesopause region at Rothera compared with the South Pole,” said Patrick Espy, a senior scientist with the British Antarctic Survey.
Although the clouds were lower at Rothera than at the South Pole, they were considerably higher than at similar latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere, Gardner said.

It is located 1,452 miles from the Rothera British research base at an elevation of 9,300 feet (almost twice the elevation of Denver, Colorado).
The Antarctic Peninsula, where the Rothera British research station is located, loomed 880 miles over the Drake Passage, some of the roughest waters in the world.
The remaining plane would stay in Rothera to serve as a backup aircraft in the event that the first aircraft went down en route.
