Gergiev and the orchestra revelled in the orchestral introduction’s synthesis of Russian folk themes, mock and grotesque march-themes, chorale episodes, long, ostinato-like contrapuntal configurations, among other things.
The Rotterdam orchestra (obviously well trained by Gergiev) played often complex, difficult music with quite staggering displays of virtuosity, especially from the percussion, woodwind and brass.
Also it must be tempting for any conductor to exploit the virtuosity of the Rotterdam Philharmonic.

With Passions the orchestra awoke and took on a dark impassioned sound with throbbing double basses producing a weighty rugged texture, and the use of ‘hard sticks’ gave the timpani added intensity.
The white hot ending with the full orchestra was given extra weight by the two thudding bass drums, bringing this excellent account of a difficult work to a triumphant close.

Gergiev, who is artistic director and chief conductor of Russia's Mariinsky Theatre (formerly the Kirov Opera), received the title of the Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion during the festival's opening at De Doelen concert hall Saturday [September 10], RIA Novosti reported.
Rotterdam Mayor Ivo Opstelten presented the knighthood on behalf of the queen and gave the conductor the first copy of a four-CD set of highlights from the previous nine Gergiev festivals.
