Rottnest Island was inhabited by Aborigines since approximately 30,000 years ago, until rising sea levels separated the island from the mainland of Western Australia approximately 7,000 years ago.
Another aspect of World War II was the placement of large guns in the middle of Rottnest Island for defence of the Fremantle port, and the construction of a railway between the jetty at Thompson Barracks at the eastern end of the island and the guns for the transport of materials for the guns.
Rottnest is one of the few areas in the world where the quokka can be found.

Rottnest was a severe, forbidding prison: the work was drudging and hard, cells were cramped and over-crowded, and the winters harsh on the poorly dressed and blanketed prisoners.
She was wrecked on Duck Rock on the night of 15 May 1842, rounding Rottnest on a voyage from Port Leschenault (Bunbury) to Fremantle.
The vessel was seen by the lookout on Rottnest and a pilot boat was sent out, but she sailed straight past and on to Transit Reef, where she stuck.
