University of Virginia - Rotunda History
The Rotunda at the University of Virginia was designed by Thomas Jefferson as the architectural and academic heart of his community of scholars, or what he termed the "academical village." As the phrase implies, learning was for Jefferson an integral part of life.
The academical village is based on the assumption that the life of the mind is the pursuit of all participants in the University, that learning is a lifelong and shared process, and that interaction between scholars and students enlivens the pursuit of knowledge.
The Rotunda is the focal point of the academical village, which includes the Rotunda at the north end; the Pavilions, which house faculty; and the student rooms along the Lawn.

Symmetry in Architecture by Kim Williams, Architect
Architecture is most frequently characterized by the nature of its elements: we recognize a Greek temple by its portico and pediments; a Gothic cathedral is characterized by its pointed arches and flying buttresses.
This architectural space is most likely characterized by symmetry as well, though it is perhaps less familiar, and it is a symmetry which we experience.
The reason for the change in symmetries is that, when we enter into the rotunda we leave behind the zone of the terrestrial, represented by the horizontal axis, and experience the zone of the celestial, symbolized by the vertical axis.

The Architectural Politics of Thomas Jefferson
American architecture, Jefferson believed, would embody the fulfillment of the civic life of Americans, and he sought to establish the standards of a national architecture, both aesthetically and politically.
The counterpoint to the Rotunda, rather than the vestiges of empire, is the scenic wonder of the natural world, suggesting the harmony of man and nature present in the pure mathematical design and in the architectural material of the University.
Despite the architectural genius displayed in his work, he sought total control over the project and executed it with an unflagging adherence to classical order, and the rigid structure of his architecture extended to the society which would inhabit it.

His architectural works were an integral part of the neoclassical movement, but their adaptation to the convenience, ideals, and requirements of the new nation made them uniquely Jeffersonian.
His architecture reflected his high regard for the classical civilizations of Rome and Greece and was part of the classical trend that swept through Europe in the eighteenth century.
As embodied in Jefferson's architecture, these ideals also were depicted by historian Howard Adams: As the house of the chief architect of the New Republic, Monticello continues to speak openly of those goals Jefferson held for himself, his family, his government, and his fellow countrymen.
