Moulin Rouge (2001) - Ninth Symphony Films Review
the movie was shot largely at fox studios in sydney, australia, with no location filming at all.
The world that Moulin Rouge endeavors to create strains its credibility in that in normal circumstances it would seem to be phony.
It was necessary for the filmmakers to create an the entire world of the Moulin Rouge, and backing down from any element in the picture (camera work, costumes, songs) would have made it seem like some part of the film was missing.

The fact that the stars of the movie include singing prostitutes, midgets, and narcoleptic Argentineans played by actors who for the most part have no singing or dancing experience could not have helped his cause.
His fantastical vision of a movie is entertainment at its highest.
Ironically, despite the fact that Moulin Rouge is one of the stranger movies to come out in a long while, the story is classically simple.

Both she and Ewan McGregor sang and danced all of their parts in the movie- no other voices or dancers were used ala Natalie Wood in "West Side Story" or Jennifer Beals in "Flashdance." Nicole and Ewan did it all, and really makes this film look and feel real.
I saw this movie 4 times in the theater, and countless times since on DVD, and it never grows old for me. It has become one of my all-time favorite movies, and I think, one of the best ever made.
At the time of this movie's release in theaters, I was working at one of the local cinemas, and I was amazed at how many people would walk out.

Moulin Rouge Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
The Moulin Rouge also became synonymous with the Can-Can (which literally means 'tittle-tattle'), a provocative dance that has become indelibly ingrained into the popular consciousness by films such as 1953's "Moulin Rouge" and 1960's "Can-Can".
With his newest film "Moulin Rouge", writer/director Baz Luhrmann re-imagines the famous Parisian nightspot, circa 1899, as a larger-than-life house of decadence and debauchery, where 'the rich and powerful come to play with the young and beautiful'.
Meanwhile, Satine and the owner of the Moulin Rouge (Jim Broadbent, seen recently in "Bridget Jones's Diary") are in the midst of wooing the well-heeled Duke of Worcester (Richard Roxburgh of "Mission: Impossible II") into investing in the Moulin Rouge.

A bold attempt to resuscitate the movie musical, "Moulin Rouge" is a sometimes glorious, sometimes disastrous folly, reminiscent of the efforts of Ken Russell ("Tommy") and - not always intentionally - the Monty Python team.
And "Moulin Rouge" certainly has plenty of the delirious romanticism, obvious lip-synching, cheesy visual effects, and shameless artificiality of Bombay musicals (although it lacks the compulsory combat and wet-sari scenes).
They want to put on a musical play at the Moulin Rouge, the legendary nightclub where the cancan was first invented (Oddly enough, the version of the dance shown here is a lot less decadent than the real thing, which was performed without underwear) and Christian volunteers to write the show.

 Moulin Rouge: Cinephiles Movie Review
Moulin Rouge brings to the screen the visual and aural spectacle associated with the famed music hall (inaugurated in Paris in 1889), the home of the exuberant cancan dancers often described as "the most exotic sex market in Paris".
Moulin Rouge slightly furthers its raison d'être by insinuating the artistic and social revolution that prompted a democratization of leisure (or a "leveling of enjoyments" where all classes merged) and that lay the foundation for the 20th century's production of mass culture.
Appropriately, Moulin Rouge includes artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (played by John Leguizamo), who is known for immortalizing the subjects of brothels, bars and dance halls in his paintings, prints and posters.

Christian is busy writing a show for the Moulin Rouge that hilariously and tragically copies the backstage story, while no one except Zidler knows that Satine’s little cough is a harbinger of something dire.
Seeing the Moulin Rouge girls conquer the floor on their entrance to the strains of "Voulez-vous coucher avec-moi" as Zidler invites us, his patrons, into the establishment is the modern version of the effect a tamer version of the pitch would have had on a less spectacle-jaded audience.

Imagine a movie where virtually every line of the dialogue is a line or lines from the lyrics of famous pop songs.
Then make it a period movie set in the early 1900's but make all of the songs sung by the cast power pop that wouldn’t sound out of place on a top 40 radio station.

It knows that a lot of people have turned their backs on musicals and that younger people are not crazy about musicals (including myself), and so it does the smart thing: Incorporate new songs with well-known songs, and even spoof them a little bit.
Moulin Rouge is surprisingly funny, which helps keep the audience entertained, and some of the funniest moments come during the songs.
