The Castle class locomotives were a group of 4-6-0 steam locomotive of the Great Western Railway.

The inner bailey of the large stone ringwork Castle was built in 1068 under the instruction of William the Conqueror to defend this important town.
All that remains of the castle today is the early Norman Gatehouse, one of the earliest pieces of Norman building work to survive in the whole of England, and Athelstans Tower.
For many years the castle's yard was used as a gathering place, however the fine Georgian Assize County Courts built in 1774 now occupy the inner part of the castle so this is no longer possible.

It was first used by Devon topographical artists in the 1820s and became the medium for the small format line engraved vignette views of Devon which were popular from the 1840s, both because of the fine detail that was possible and because the harder metal made long print-runs possible.
The example shown for purposes of comparison depicts the same view of Rougement Castle as the copper engraving and was engraved by C.J.G.Sprake in 1831.

Today the walls and gatehouse remain from Norman times and the old gateway to Rougemont Castle contains the oldest non-ecclesiastical Norman arch in the country.
The inner bailey of the Castle houses the County Court built in 1774 for the assizes and is not open to the public but the walls and gardens can be explored.

At that point, Steve said 'did you know Rougemont Castle is built on an extinct volcano?' Now, I was somewhat hesitant to believe him, having lived in Exeter for 10 years and never having heard such a tale...
So anyway we decided to go and see the castle walls, and spent a lovely hour walking through Rougemont Park, which is in the centre of Exeter.
We had to pick Joe up after this, but having collected him we headed home to do the volcano experiments - the children followed instructions to make their volcano erupt, and had to say which combination of ingredients was the most effective.
