Round Island - Île Ronde   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Round Island is the remnant of an extinct, eroded and now partly submerged volcanic cone situated about 22 kilometres (15 miles) to the North East of Mauritius, this island is an ecological treasure house.
Round Island is sufficiently isolated that not only is it the final refuge for many Mascarine endemics, but over the eons, a number of unique animals and plants have evolved there, but like Mauritius, it has suffered degradation.
Their browsing was largely responsible for the total loss of the island’s natural hardwood scrub-forest, the severe degradation of the last example of a unique palm association, as well as the loss through erosion of around 90% of the island’s soil.

Round Island skink - Leiolopisma telfairii: More Information - ARKive
Since the destruction of the tropical hardwood forest on Round Island at the hands of humans and the goats and rabbits they stocked the island with, this species and the others it shares Round Island with are restricted to the grasses, scrub and leaf litter beneath the remaining endemic palm forest (2).
Round Island is a refuge for many rare and endangered plants and animals, several of which are found nowhere else in the world (5).
While other Round Island endemic species might be translocated to other islets formerly within their range and which have had exotic predators removed, the skink is such a voracious predator that there are concerns it may feed on, and deplete, other rare lizard species endemic to some of these islets (6) (2).

Round Island, a 151-hectare nature reserve about 20 kilometers off the northern coast of Mauritius, is of exceptional biological importance.
Until recently, Round Island was threatened by introduced rabbits and goats released in the nineteenth century.
Unglamorous as it was, the removal of rabbits from Round Island is a highly significant conservation achievement that will greatly aid the survival of some of the world's most endangered species.

Round Island day gecko - Phelsuma guentheri: More Information - ARKive
The Round Island day gecko is found on bottle palms, fan palms and Pandanus plants, but due to the destruction of these plants by tropical cyclones and over-grazing by goats and rabbits over the last 150 years, this gecko is also forced to live in lava rock crevices (2) (4).

Round Island is therefore the only remaining palm savannah site in the region, despite the fact that the vegetation type once probably covered the entire northern plain of Mauritius (Vaughan & Weihe, 1937), an area now under sugarcane.
Although the vegetation of the island is degraded, North and Bullock (1986) suggest that some areas retain the potential for rapid recovery when herbivore populations are reduced and regeneration of the bottle palm at least is already apparent.
Round island is also badly eroded because of the over-grazing and browsing, and there is continued soil erosion (80-90% of the island is now bare rock) and a lack of regeneration (the number of mature bottle palm trees has declined to eight and the number of hurricane palms to two).
