Round the Horne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Round the Horne was one of the most influential BBC Radio comedy programmes, comparable to The Goon Show in its influence on other comedy programmes.
Round the Horne featured a parody a week, several catchphrases, and many memorable characters.
The show normally opened with a deadpan delivery by Horne of "the answers to last week's quiz", a quiz that listeners neither heard nor knew about, and which was laced with (what were for BBC Radio at that time) incredible double-entendres and sexual innuendo: e.g.

BBC 7 - Comedy - Round the Horne
Round the Horne crackled out of the nation's wirelesses Sunday afternoons from 1965, becoming one of the most popular comedies of the era until it finished in '69.
A colourfully bizarre collection of characters and memorable catch phrases burst across the airwaves from the pages of its brilliantly inventive and sometimes outrageous scripts, the majority of which were written by zany duo Barry Took and Marty Feldman.
Kenneth Horne as the straight man anchored the whole careering, seething, teaming, chaotic hullabaloo emitted from the likes of J Peasemold Gruntfuttock, Rambling Syd Rumpo, Daphne Whitethigh, Shamus Android, Binkie Huckaback and Dame Celia Molestrangler (played by Betty Marsden, Hugh Paddick, Bill Pertwee and Kenneth Williams).

Horne was brilliant with a script, a master of comic timing and an unselfish foil.
Horne and his supporting cast (Kenneth Williams, Hugh Paddick, Betty Marsden, Bill Pertwee) then appeared in the similarly themed 'Round The Horne' (1965-9), unequivocally one of the funniest comedy series in radio history.

Round The Horne was one of the most daring radio comedies of the 1960's - and all the more surprising, given the (on the surface) conservative appearence of the star, Kenneth Horne!
Written mostly by Marty Feldman and Barry Took, the show consisted of Horne acting as the central hub, around which the rest of the cast would perform sketches, songs and impersonations.
In addition to Horne, the cast included Kenneth Williams, Hugh Paddick, Betty Marsden and Bill Pertwee, and the announcer was Douglas Smith (who frequently became involved in more than just announcing!).

The theatrical recreation of the 1960s radio series Round the Horne had inevitably attracted many of the now greying fans who had listened to the original series.
But it wasn't exclusively a nostalgia trip, there were many others who had discovered the series later or were curious to see a recreation of a show that was considered to be way ahead of its time and is name checked as having influenced such comedy greats as Monty Python.

Jonathan Rigby has a tougher job as the pivotal Kenneth Horne, the straight-laced Establishment figure who provides the straight-man foil to this whole circus.
Yet he is excellent, producing a pitch-perfect reproduction of Horne's rich, educated, but essentially nondescript, received pronunciation.

What made the show something of a cult, aside from the generally high level of the writing by, at various times, Barry Took, Marty Feldman, Johnnie Mortimer and Brian Cooke, was the ever-present sense of slipping something past the BBC censors.
It is barely theatricalised, the cast standing in front of microphones and holding scripts, just as the originals would have, with the only physical humour coming from the kinds of mugging and flirting with the studio audience that went on back then.
Jonathan Rigby as Horne provides the appropriately solid and avuncular presence of the straight man, while Robin Sebastian does an admirably broad copy of Kenneth Williams, Kate Brown mugs away as Marsden, and Nigel Harrison and Charles Armstrong provide some necessary ballast as the generally more subdued Paddick and Smith.
