The filmmakers also delineate the strata of a rounder's life in New York City, from various games with "fish" (suckers with more money than skill) to the poker clubs, which vary from the more respectable Chesterfields to an edgy, subterranean lair run by Teddy KGB (a malevolent John Malkovich employing a near-inscrutable Russian émigré accent).
Rounders is a morality tale set in a world that plays by its own rules.
Like Dahl's noir films, it's formula with a twist: a very strong cast (Norton is especially good as a man who dearly deserves his nickname), colorful and stereotypical characters who nonetheless still hold a few surprises up their sleeves, and a claustrophobic world made surprisingly expansive by cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier's sweat-soaked widescreen images.

"Rounders" (a term for a skilled player who earns a living at poker) is about Mike's guilt-by-association re-entry into the gambling scene and his resulting struggle to maintain a front as the scrupulous, upright Joe he's trying to become.
The pivotal moment in the film -- the apex of Mike's understanding of his nature -- depends on a disappointingly ingenuous tell (unconscious physical give-away that card players use to deduce your confidence in your hand) from, supposedly, the most skilled rounder in the film.

Rounders, the fifth movie by John Dahl, is good enough to join his great double whammy from 1994; Red Rock West and The Last Seduction.
Other directors simply pay homage to film noir and their movies come across as copies or throwbacks, but Dahl's movies work because he seems to understand the inner workings of film noir, and the absurd situations that people can get into.
No film noir character can ever escape the call of the underworld, no matter how much he denies it.) The catalyst is Mike's best friend Worm, played by the again-brilliant Edward Norton.
