Roundhay is one of the better known of Leeds's suburbs.
It is in the east of the city, adjacent to Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Gledhow and Oakwood; and is home to Roundhay Park, a grand, Victorian park which has the distinction of being the largest inner-city park in Europe.
Roundhay holds the honour of being the location of the world's oldest surviving film, Roundhay Garden Scene, which is thought to have been shot in 1888.

Roundhay Garden Scene is a 1888 short film directed by French inventor Louis Le Prince.
It was filmed on Oakwood Grange Road in Roundhay, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England on October 14, 1888 according to Le Prince's son, Adolphe, and Sarah Whitley died on October 24, 1888 1.
On September 16, 1890 while about to patent his invention in London and to perform his first official public exhibition in New York, Louis Le Prince, director, mysteriously vanished in a train between Dijon and Paris.

Just the very idea of taking Roundhay Park and turning it into some mega corporate water park is horrifying.
It's one of the peaceful, pleasant spots in Leeds where a great number of residents and visitors alike can enjoy the beauty of a true park, with all it's tranquility and peace.
Although I haven't lived in Leeds for 30 years now, I have very fond memories and I was deeply saddened to hear about the present stae of Roundhay Park.

The entire Roundhay estate was purchased by the City in 1872 and opened as a public park by His Royal Highness Prince Arthur on the 19th of September 1872.
At the time, the then Lord Mayor John Barran was ridiculed for buying a 'White Elephant' - in that the park was too far out of the city for the majority of the population to enjoy, and in any event the park had just one access road - an old 'turnpike' road dating from 1808.
The Roundhay Park Arena is a natural amphitheatre which provides the venue for many special events ranging from sports days to major pop concerts and the spectacular bonfire and firework displays on 5th November.

The crypt at St John the Evangelist Roundhay holds a vault where members of three generations of a Leeds family called Cadman are buried.
In 1827 the Cadman's second son, William, married Amelia Rhodes of Roundhay, by which time he was probably already a partner in the family tobacco business in Lady Lane that he was to inherit on his father's death.
It may have been her own wish to be buried at St John's Roundhay, the church where she was married, but one would have expected at least a commemorative tablet in the church at Wold Newton.
