| | 2003 Designation, NH - Exemplary Ecosystem Initiatives - FHWA (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15) |
 | | While much of the route had been previously widened to modern standards, a 17.6-mile stretch, including five miles known as "the Gap", which had not been upgraded for 60 years, required reconstruction to meet modern safety standards. |
 | | The Gap remained a narrow two-lane stretch of highway, which ran through a region of forested and riparian wetlands, as well as historical structures properties, private homes and businesses. |
 | | The combination of cooperation between agencies and local concerns, implementation of a diverse and well integrated mitigation strategy to protect a broad scope of resources, use of current science and technology, and the timely construction of a much needed highway project, make NH Route 101 a truly Exemplary Ecosystem Initiative. |
