Oklahoma was the heart of Route 66, from Quapaw to Texola, the highway brought travelers 400 miles across the state.
Route 66 Museum developed out of the Museum of the Western Trails, which opened in 1968, and was operated by the Oklahoma Industrial Trust and Recreation Department.
In 1991, the museum was transferred to the Oklahoma Historic Society, which decided to redevelop the museum to focus on transportation and Route 66.

Route 1 from Boston to Washington was a continuous string of traffic lights, gas stations, diners, and body shops and regarded not only as inefficient, but also as a national eyesore.

The death knell for Route 66 came in 1956 with the signing of the Interstate Highway Act by President Dwight Eisenhower.
In fact, Kansas, with its roughly thirteen-mile-long (21 km) stretch of US 66 slicing off the southeast corner of the state near the Missouri and Oklahoma state lines, was totally bypassed by the late 1940s as part of a quicker, shorter route to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Woodbridge, VA Drove Route 66 in the 1950's while I was in the Navy.
Driving on Route 66 was healing for me - to travel at a more human pace than the interstates, to eat real food and sleep in real beds (and save a few bucks at the same time!), to see real sights and not manufactured ones.
